Yea, didn't think of the Abuse risk at all :( Even if it's limited to Gentoo forum with no outside referrals it's still not 100% safe. How is this managed on all other forums that do support images?

Could just do it like the bugzilla does it. Uploads allowed with no inline embedding functionality and a low filesize limit (bz's is 1000KB). Also strict rate limits and a MIME type whitelist.

It doesn't need to be idiot-proof, it just needs to have enough friction that the idiots would go elsewhere.
Sounds good. Also limit to logged in users.

That doesn't fix external links written in blogs and the like, though. Like I said earlier, we'll work on it.
External links to external sites are not really an issue. Those come and go and little can be done about them.
However.... External links pointing back at the forums could be preserved, and this is what the initial question seemed to be about.
Good to know you're trying to figure out this part.

Krinn, I can't imagine going through all those migration tests just to abandon our accounts in the process. It would be way easier to just make the old forums read only and ask us to re-register with the new url.
To clarify, it is _not_ a suggestion from me; archiving old forums and starting from scratch would be lazy and clumsy way to do that.

Not to worry: all of that will be preserved. :)

Since the very beginning, the Gentoo Forums have had a generous refund policy. If you're dissatisfied in any way, we're prepared to offer you a full refund of all subscription fees paid to-date. :P

desultory, a forum Admin with longer historical knowledge than I have, has explained to me that we know how to solve this problem. Old links, both internal and external, will all work! :D

You can try it with phpbb 3.2.x demo

I might get called a zoomer for this, but I'd like to see the forum look more like the main Gentoo website with a option for the old, current look for compatibility or nostalgia.

I don't know what a zoomer is, but what are the differences that you see? The logo is the primary difference. I don't know if the "emerge output" screen capture could reasonably be positioned similarly.

This is the future. Gentoo forums are upgrading. 8O

If the links get broken then at least do the topic and message ID stay the same?

EDIT:

Yay.

Now I only hope that the upgrade will not bring too many useless features but rather more features under the hood.

phpbb3 is relatively simple / similar to what we already have, so I don't think much can go wrong in that regard. phpbb offers a generic demo if want to check if it works fine with whatever you use, not that the look is any indication since gentoo has a similar-to-current custom theme (not that I've seen it). Themes and plugins can be adjusted/changed if some features are disliked without having to redo everything anyhow, I'm sure there will be a feedback thread for this.

Perhaps some sneaky-peeks are in order!

This is what they mean by taking mobile devices into consideration, right?

(Text not quite there yet.)

Most phpBB 3 styles seem to be limited in width, but we found one that doesn't do that, and base our tweaks over it (they also seem to put profiles to the right in post view for some reason).

How about a logo for Off the Wall?

On a more(?) serious note, yeah, we'll almost definitely have more than one style for users to choose from, but no promises on when. Indeed, the priority is on getting the thing done, with a style that at least somewhat resembles the current one.

So you can use the mobility of the device, eh. Like using more then one orientation :-)

Get it working first. The design is second.

Anyway good work to anyone who is on this ride :-)

Any theme which can help reduce the mobile style of response may be the best feature of the upgrade (based on the style in general, and I quote, "I have a bad feeling about this").

The demo work nicely with jsless browser.

For the responsive, no issue with 300px width as minimum value.

Thanks to the team for offering quality web services

Will the new forums still be hosted on a Gentoo server?

Yes, if only because no third-party outsourcing provider would ever put up with OTW.

The hosting arrangement will not be grossly changed, different servers with different details but otherwise similar to the current arrangement.

Might I suggest scrolling down a bit? The Gentoo infrastructure team does the quotidian software management, but they do not actually run the hosting service.

I know Gentoo leases the bare metal. I read the question as asking whether or not it'd become a SaaS thing like Ubuntu's branded Stack Overflow subsite, where nobody knows who runs the show at all.

Actually, it is donated, including upgrading the hardware, even after we were subject to DDoS that strained the Hanlon's Razor threshold rather badly. (In that I can scarcely believe that deliberately choosing to follow the most lenient set of permissions in robots.txt when your own bot is expressly denied, and ramping request rates up to connection flooding levels when your bot gets fed a steady diet of nothing is actually done purely out of incompetence, Brandwatch.) In short, especially for not getting money out of Gentoo, they have provided what has been, by all appearances, exemplary support.

Ah. Yeah, we are not farming out the forums to some third party, certainly not getting some SaaS service. We are just getting new software ready to go in between the web server and the DB and the various associated fun that entails. You are not getting rid of us that easily.

You assume they gets no return
You could pay a publicity to sell your clothes, or gives free clothes to someone known that will wear them... just an example, not getting money doesn't mean you get nothing from it (and lot of opensource projects are made of devs that work for free, you cannot say they get nothing back)
Even you, how much you are paid to be a gentoo admin :)
