First... I'm a troll. That being said I'll ask the stupid question:

How do I start KDE?!?

Code:
pithlit@honey pithlit $ startkde
xset:  unable to open display ""
xset:  unable to open display ""
xsetroot:  unable to open display ''
startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: cannot connect to X server
kdeinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
ksmserver: cannot connect to X server
startkde: Shutting down...
Warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.
pithlit@honey pithlit $

I's just been emerged, xfree is configured corectly as enlightenment works... and I'm clueless (and guessing there's a very simple solution  )

I think you don't understand what that means.
A troll would never admit to being one.
A troll is defined on the usenet - and by extension on any internet communication forum - to mean:
"someone who posts off-topic with the sole intent of getting attention, by preference resulting in dissention and flamewars."

Not discussion - dissent and annoyance.
I doubt you're admitting to being one of those.

The word you want is probably "newbie".

As to starting KDE:
Have you read the Desktop Guide ?

Please do.

Code listing 3.5: Running KDM

# kdm

Re-do the whole desktop guide form the beginning ?
You don't need to remerge all of xfree or kde - if portage has built binary packages for everything you can force it to use these by using "emerge -K".

Reboot ?

try this

Code:
#echo startkde > .xinitrc
#startx

if that works you can probably call kdm explicitly by

Code:
#/usr/kde/3.x/bin/kdm

where x is your version #

if that works then kdm is probably not in your path.

Thanks... that worked. Altho I have no idea why it didn't work when I manually entered startkde into .xinitrc. Oh well... moving onto fixing the sound.

Hello, I just installed Kde aswell today. I went through all the guides over and over and configured everything. Kde wont start up though, when i type kdm it starts to load then the screen flashes 3 times and goes back to # I followed those suggestions, but the same thing happened. Is there anything that i could do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

I didnt get an error like his though, the error i got showed up when i type xstart and it says
Code:
could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.

This happened to me the other day (kdeinit error), I just re-emerged kde (emerge kde-libs) and then it worked fine. Not sure what happened but it fixed it.

Did you do what Azlan said? And forget about kdm until you can't make startkde work.

Try
Code:
updatedb
as root and then
Code:
locate libart_lgpl2.so.2
. the package you're looking for is prolly the folder name.

You can emerge libart_lgpl like
Code:

 $ emerge -p libart_lgpl

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] media-libs/libart_lgpl-2.3.16

$ emerge -p libart_lgpl

btw... a little off topic but... have you considered using some other window manager? Like fluxbox, enlightenment or... whatever? I mean... no offense to all KDE fans but that thing is pretty bloated. Remember... Gentoo is all about choices.

I get the exact same error that Pithlit gets.
I can startx and get KDE to run. It's upsetting though because I don't get my kdm login screen at bootup. I don't think startkde gets the login screen, just something I was trying in my troubleshooting.
DISPLAY=0 startkde gives a similar error.

I didn't emerge anything between the time it worked and the time it stopped. Though I don't always go through the complete shutdown routine, because of other, unrelated problems with KDE.

Please help. I can live with it for now, but it's hard enough getting my girlfriend to use Linux. This is the kind of thing that will just drive her to reboot to Windows.

Hi

I had have the same problem, it was working fine yesterday, but today I can't logg into kde or gnome from kdm or directly with startkde, but it works fine from the command line with startx, and kde as default in xsessions. This is quite a puzzle as I did not change anything in between. I did reboot through...

Hope someone can come up with an answer, I am re-emerging kdelibs to see what happens, already done xfree again, no luck......

My problem is slightly different.
kde starts alright, I just cannot get any application to start from the desktop. It's like I do not own the desktop. I cannot put any application on the desktop either.

Hi all

This problem is not just with kde. it seems that gnome, enlightenment etc all will not start from kdm or gdm, but start ok from command line if set in Xsessions and use command startx, startkde does not work. I have recomplied most progs but no change, I have started to check file permissions, again no luck so far...

Help
