DAR
See http://dar.linux.free.fr/doc/presentation.html for DAR description
For LRS , the full backup is the torrent release
Differential backups will be the daily updates
A release cycle will be from torrent release to newer
Useful if you want install LRS on your own partition schema (just like a Stage[3,4])
Keep in mind that you can customize LRS according your needs . It's Gentoo :O
RAW
RAW image is a cloned backup
Uncompress ZSTD archive and put the raw image on USB/HDD/SSD device using your favouirite tools
(see : app-cdr/isoimagewriter , dd , dcfldd , RosaImageWriter ..)
OVA
Virtual Disk Image (Virtualbox) was moved to OVA ; see my previous post
====
* Kernel 5.6.15
* Add ZFS support
* SAMBA service over GVFS for Thunar filemanager
* Multiple updates/rebuilds
News :
FSArchiver image is replaced with DAR archive backup
Torrent release is the Full reference backup for the next daily differential updates until the latest daily is ~1.2GB size , then a new full version will be released
See "HOWTO_dar_archive_updates.info" file for details.
I'm trying this update solution for my slower USB pendrives that I can't update without lose my data everytime.
PS: The full RAW and OVA images will be released anyway for daily.
If you need of FSArchiver image , just manage the RAW image , probe all its partitions and then create your own partition backup
See LRS.info file for details.
Good luck and enjoy
Please share and seed the torrents _________________ LRS 64/32 on G.Drive |

See LRS.info and all files that I share on my Dropbox
No special knowledge required.
Just mount and manage the raw file and its partition and chrooted in.
Inside chroot environment you can do everything you want just explained on the Gentoo WIki.
Consider this topic as my Howto build your own Gentoo image/installation alternantive
I'd like to share with the Gentoo community my work.
The release contains some backups/restoration tools that I need.
If you don't trust about this simply don't download it
This topic was splitted as you can see in the first post of the topic. _________________ LRS 64/32 on G.Drive |

The daily folder on dropbox is empty.
I downloaded the IMG torrent and opened it in a torrent client. That torrent client doesn't find any tracker URLs for that torrent. How is torrent tracking supposed to work for LRS? |

What do you mean by "coming back"? I manually added one tracker (coppersurfer) to the torrent. That did not suffice to find any peers or additional trackers. Also, I don't think one should have to add any trackers manually.
The download from daily worked. |

Hi, thanks for maintaining this. I just wanted to add a "Thanks" as a satisfied user!
If I might add a feature request. I find a frequent overlapping need for these stick to also be to do a ram test. Might you consider memtest as a boot option? I think it can be slipped in with the whole image in the same location as the initramfs would fit?
I'm also a little unsure how best to customise the grub menus to make them use a serial console (think IPMI access - I have zero machines with screens attached, and I just leave USB keys in them with a disto like this for any emergency boot recovery. Generally access is via serial console). I think this is likely my failure to grok grub mind, but it looks as though there could be a default variable introduced near the top of the script which is then picked up by all command lines to specify a "console=tty..." kind of line? I wonder if you might consider to add such a framework (could then be easily customised by users who have this need)?
Thanks and good luck. I have space for hosting if dropbox ever becomes insufficient? |

Hi. Thanks for this.
I've never played with the serial console
So ... I'm trying to do this.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/7918/ko3Oqz.png
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/1849/vJgsVM.png
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/7467/tKwYYu.png
/etc/inittab
Code: |
s0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 115200 ttymxc0 vt100
|
/etc/default/grub
Code: |
# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
# GRUB_TERMINAL=serial
# GRUB_SERIAL_COMMAND="serial --speed=115200 --unit=0 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1"
|
You can Enabled/Disabled Serial Console via Bootloader after first boot of LRS
On TTY1 you can Enabled/Disabled Serial Console.
The script append or remove follow
Code: | console=ttyS0,115200n8 |
to the bootloader kernel line and update grub then perform a LRS reboot
By default "console=ttyS0,115200n8" is atteched to the kernel line but an option for Serial console should be showed anyway (Not need to select at boot)
Keep in mind : if you enable Serial Console , GFXMode on Grub will be disabled.
Applications to manage Serial Console are installed
Code: | app-misc/screen
net-dialup/minicom
|
I can't test it now if it works , I will setup a VM to test if I can.
About Memtest :
Mem test stop to works on all my Gentoo installations (I don't now why and I can't check it now)
so memtest86+ is installed but it is disabled.
Enable memtest
Code: | # chmod +x /etc/grub.d/39_memtest86+ && grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg |

Hi, OK, so what a fabulous response! I grabbed the latest version and I can see that you have actually rebuilt it with "new features"! Amazing! Thanks so much for the extremely clear documentation and guidance!
So for the benefit of anyone finding this through google (looking for Linux Recovery Access using IPMI SOL Serial port access"), you have given me all the framework I needed. Thanks
In my specific case I have most of my machines popping up on ttyS1,115200, so in /etc/default/grub, I changed the "--unit=1" and on the kernel command line I changed to console=ttyS1,115200n8
I don't know that any one serial port is more common than another, but my supermicro machines seem to use ttyS1 and I just got in an old Dell which initially used S2, but I changed it in the bios to use S1 for consistency.
Regarding a serial getty, it seems like the advice changed in recent openrc. I've switched a number of machines to use openrc-init, which replaces the usual init. Doesn't seem to make much difference, but openrc-init ignores inittab and makes parallel startup more readable. I needed to turn on the sysv-utils use flag for openrc to enable compat utilities for reboot/shutdown (saves some typing and finger memory)
So to keep compatibility with that, leads to doing something like the following to enable a boot serial console. Note that it's useful to edit the conf.d file to set a baud rate
Code: |
ln -s agetty /etc/init.d/agetty.ttyS1
cp -a /etc/conf.d/agetty /etc/conf.d/agetty.ttyS1
rc-update add default agetty.ttyS1
|
With these changes and your helpful note to run:
Code: | grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg |
I now can run using ipmi SOL and watch the bios screens, see the grub console and get a login prompt, all over the serial port!
Just for completeness, I use the ipmiutils to get a SOL port. Those with Dell iDrac or Supermicro, etc, ipmi ports may be interested in the following incantation to pull up the serial console (SOL)
Code: | ipmitool -I lanplus -H 192.168.x.y -U ipmirootuser -P "supersecretpass" sol activate |
Obviously if you don't have IPMI then you can just use a normal serial port (eg via USB), but this won't get you visibility of the bios, only from the grub prompt onwards. Still very useful in many cases though
I try to ensure that I can rescue all my servers from wherever I find myself. So I deliberately never plug a screen or keyboard into them. The initial boot is done using your fantastic LRS system on a USB key. That key stays inside the machine in case of any emergency or failed boot. The initial system install is all done using SSH (much simpler and faster than using the IPMI remote media feature). And the basic idea is that by installing completely bare metal using only this USB stick, then it should be possible to rescue it, no matter how wrong things go, all from the beach if necessary...
IPMI and remote serial access does create some new security headaches to manage, but I would very strongly recommend it to anyone. Especially in conjunction with LRS! |

Just as an aside, but memtest86+ didn't work out for me on my Dell machine. It's a 2650 dual processor with 128GB ram.
The memtest86+ you have hangs after a few seconds at 3%. Doesn't respond to the keyboard and needs to be remote reset/power down. The version with "elf" in the title just goes to a coloured screen and doesn't show anything - I'm unsure what it's supposed to do...
I have an antique version of sysrescue that I borrowed from another machine. Must be 5+ years old. That version of memtest86 seemed to function, although I didn't watch it carefully, but I think it wouldn't test more than 64GB of ram (ie about half of it)
This Dell takes an age to POST, literally many minutes, so I have not tested this exhaustively to see if another config might rescue it. I might give it a whirl on a few other machines first to see what happens (we are in lockdown here, so difficult to get over to the machine to fiddle with swapping USB sticks). However, this is the only machine I own with more than 64GB of ram.
Notwithstanding, I assume this is a memtest86 issue, not your wrapping, so thanks so much for adding this!!
I think this is now near perfect for my needs. The only thing I use a bit which I didn't see was "ncdu", but I won't be sad if you didn't add it.
Thanks for maintaining this - happy user here! |

Memtest86+ (portage version) doesn't work in UEFI mode.
I'm testing a check flag that detects if the system is running UEFI or BIOS mode.
If system is running under BIOS system simply update grub and reboot the system.
I've added "sys-apps/memtester" that you can check the ram(s) or a portion of ram(s) on a running system.
No problem for sys-fs/ncdu ... It will be included to the next upload
Please test serial console ... _________________ LRS 64/32 on G.Drive |

re memtest86+. Do you have any further info on what "doesn't work" might mean specifically? Are you referring to the failure of the "elf" version? Crazy that boot mode even makes a difference?
I should have stated that I'm using your 20210104.23-img.lz image version. This is taken as is, flashed directly to a USB stick and then booted. As you have created that with a UEFI boot structure, I guess that is what the system thinks I'm using? (There are other disks in the system, but I'm not using them yet - not even sure I've got a bootable machine yet - in the middle of turning all the Dell hardware into generic stuff and I don't think I've actually installed any boot firmware on the LSI copy yet?)
I wonder what is the longer term solution to get a bootable USB stick with a memtest app that can test 64GB+? Do you think there is a way to adapt the stick?
Nice work - thanks again! |

LRS has hybrid boot loader BIOS+UEFI
Code: | Disk /dev/sdc: 29,81 GiB, 31991533568 bytes, 62483464 sectors
Disk model: DataTraveler G2
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: gpt
Disk identifier: 700981BF-1069-491E-B47C-B3CA35C35A5C
Dispositivo Start Fine Settori Size Tipo
/dev/sdc1 2048 4095 2048 1M BIOS boot
/dev/sdc2 4096 208895 204800 100M EFI System
/dev/sdc3 208896 15769566 15560671 7,4G Linux filesystem

It should start from legacy boot also. (Please check BIOS setup if you need to BIOS boot) _________________ LRS 64/32 on G.Drive |

Oh.. I see. Interesting... I've been avoiding using UEFI, so please excuse ignorance here.
Hmm, I'm actually not sure how to control this if I'm honest? I will have a further poke tomorrow, but I don't think this machine has options to limit UEFI. The bios config pages are extremely limited, I just get to pick to "boot from C:", then further down I can choose that my USB stick is ahead of whatever it thinks might also be available.
Anyway, my problem. I'll have a further poke. I wonder if works to remove the UEFI partition (or change it's type) to disable the UEFI detection? Do you have some simple thoughts on this?
Thanks again! |
