PostPosted: Sun May 23, 2021 7:20 pm    Post subject: Gentoo IRC presence moving to Libera Chat Reply with quote

The Gentoo Council held an emergency single agenda item meeting today. At this meeting, the council's unanimous decision was that the official IRC presence of Gentoo should be moved to the Libera Chat IRC network and that this move be complete at latest by 13-June-2021.

A full log of the meeting will be available soon.

At the moment it is unclear whether we will retain any presence on Freenode at all; we urge all users of the #gentoo channel namespace to move to Libera Chat immediately.

IRC channel names will remain identical. You will be able to recognize Gentoo developers on Libera Chat by their IRC cloak in the usual form gentoo/developer/*.
All other technical aspects will feel rather familiar to all of us as well.

Detailed instructions for setting up various IRC clients can be found on the Help Pages of the IRC network.

I was surprised to see no discussion about whether freenode is actually dying. Regarding some other channels, I know at least some people are skeptical that there is actually a problem to begin with - they say it's all just community hysteria.

I don't think it necessarily matters whether Freenode is actually dying. According to a statement in the linked chat log, Freenode is currently extremely short of administrative staff, and there were vague claims of not trusting some of the recently added staff. Those both seem like arguments against using Freenode, at least until those problems are resolved. Migrating back to Freenode is probably not much more trouble than migrating away was, so if Freenode suddenly becomes the best place to be, the project can move back.

A quick guide to joining Libera.Chat
This post will be updated as I gather more information.

For Libera.Chat official guide to registering jump here.

If you are a bit unfamiliar with IRC here are few quick steps to get you started:
Within your IRC client program add (or connect to) a new server:
      Choose encrypted connection (tls).
      Set server address to: irc.libera.chat
If needed, specify the port number: 6697, 7000 or 7070
Upon connecting you should get notification messages from NickServ mentioning that your nick is or is not registered.
At this point you can set your nickname on libera.chat by issuing IRC command:
    Code:
    /nick <your desired nick>
... replace <your desired nick> with the nickname you'd like to use.
Next send a private message to NickServ: "REGISTER <YourPassword> <youremail@example.com>"
... without quotes. And replace <YourPassword> and <youremail@example.com> accordingly.
On most IRC clients a private message can be sent by issuing IRC command:
      Code:
      /msg <receiver> <message>
      In this case:
      Code:
      /msg NickServ REGISTER <YourPassword> <youremail@example.com>

An email will be sent to the email address you provided. Follow the guide on the email to finish your registering.

To obtain a IRC cloak (which hides your hostname) join to #libera-cloak channel. And follow the instructions on the channel topic.
At the time of writing this only saying !cloakme on the channel will give you a cloak (afterwards you will be kicked out of the channel, this is normal, no need to worry).

Finally you can join all the same #gentoo* channels as you were in on freenode.

    TODO: Reconnecting using SASL.

Feel free to ask any related questions here.

Other moderators: feel free to modify this post to correct and/or add more information etc...

No, it's on the map, though. Best info I have is from IRC:
Code:
[03:12:45] <cisco87> how is the tor support, do I have to do the same kind of dance as I did on freenode?
[03:13:08] <@amdj> cisco87: we do not currently have a tor onion service, but yes it will need sasl

[13:02:46] <SomethingLong> will there be support for tor?
[13:03:24] <@edk> we'll support tor at least as well as freenode did but i can't speak to exactly when, it'll depend how many other tasks we can hammer through

[16:23:37] <kish`> edk, when are you doing the tor service?'
[16:23:44] <@edk> kish`: when i have time

@zucca, @loki_val : thanks, well I registered my account and added my cert fingerprint to it so i'll have to wait a little, at least from my desktop client.
That said, if you use a webclient like kiwi irc, then it works fine with Tor Browser. I used it to register my nick.

The Freenode sky is FALLING - a video on youtube which goes trough some of the events of this "freenode scandal". Although not all the events related to the story are there in the video.

You need to add the previous sandal, when Gentoo considered going to OFTC

Maybe once the other shoe (sandal) drops, it will be clearer.

Yeah. I admit. It is a little "dry", but somewhat brief.

I'm partly in agreement with the guy in Zucca's video... it seems like another manufactured internet hysteria (not his words). I guess the sandal will be around size 42.

Yeah. There are accusations and evidence from side to side. We (at least I) don't know the whole truth here. It may be hysteria.
But the fact is that the people we trust (IRC ops) are now managing Libera.Chat. It's the "safest bet". On the freenode side there are lots of unknowns.

I'm not objecting to the move in any way. But it seems as if reactions led to reactions.

What seems most odd to me is that freenode is a relatively obscure property with very little monetary value. IRC isn't exactly an up and coming technology, and it didn't have that many users. So the benefit of owning it seems minimal beyond wanting to support the community. And when a split is less than friendly, I don't think either side owes anything to the other.

Hmm.. have no IRC. No available Jabber or Jabber-OMEMO or mastodorn Channel? However i just want to join for a very small Bug report. www-client/epiphany-40.1 Ebuild have a Depend on dev-libs/json-glib-1.6.2 instead of 1.2.4 as written in the today's Ebuild.

However Have a goood time. ;)

Edit: And antoher issue i had was a white wallpaper/background on gnome 40.1 on some Systems. solved by, not sure some of this: updateing dev-libs/gjs cause it belogns to gnome-light or gnome-base.

Regards,

Chris

Good day everyone,
I am the user of the Gentoo for more than 3 years, and I don't like access to Andrew Lee. I am very sorry what he did. So far I didn't use the IRC because I found the Council everywhere on discussion forums including Arch Linux. I can only thank Devs. for commissioning of Libera Chat and excellent work and patience of all. This change could not be overlooked.

I would also like to thank all the developers and contributors of Gentoo OS for their excellent work and patience. I would never trade for anything else. Thank you.

EDIT : Nevermind, I realized I missed one letter when I pasted my cert sha512 in the webchat... Good, everything works fine !
By the way, the wiki could be updated : https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/IRC/Guide#Tor
I don't have an account to do it myself.

--------------

For some reason, it doesn't work. I followed every step (I use hexchat to connect)

/etc/tor/torrc

Code:
User tor
PIDFile /run/tor/tor.pid
Log notice syslog
DataDirectory /var/lib/tor/data

MapAddress palladium.libera.chat libera75jm6of4wxpxt4aynol3xjmbtxgfyjpu34ss4d7r7q2v5zrpyd.onion

then started tor as usual with : rc-service tor start

but SASL external (cert) fails :

hexchat log :

I correctly created my cert in ~/.config/hexchat/certs/libera.pem and added it to my account using the webchat interface before so I have no clue why it doesn't work.

Any help ? Thanks
