I find brave search churn out more relevant results than DDG for my use case. I'm using brave almost exclusively for the past few months. Don't like their browser, but search is great! |

Trying startpage based on recommendations here. It's pretty good. Very annoying that clicking a link opens a new tab. |

Would you expand on that; clicking on a link where while using what? _________________ Andy Figueroa

Clicking on search result link. DuckduckGo and Google overlay the page (correct term?) with the new page. Startpage opens it in a separate ltab.
After a while, my browser has a dozen or so tabs open.
It's like "open links in separate tab" was set.
The links are much more what i was searching for than google (tons of barely related ads and Windows Ubuntu pages) or Duckduckgo (fewer commercial links but more off-topic links) |

@Tony0945
I get it. I like it. StartPage works like the Gentoo Forums. Click on a link on their search page and it opens on a new tab. I had no idea. I might start using it. _________________ Andy Figueroa

Welcome to the forums. Google directly sells search placement results. I know -- I'm a user of that service. Google also adjusts web site positioning to suit it's own objectives to maximize the profit of its owners. Google further adjusts search ranking to suit it's own political and social agenda. Furthermore, Google collects user information in order to sell those data directly to others for marketing and possibly nefarious uses. Google is a bit like an opt-in "Big Brother" (from 1984). _________________ Andy Figueroa

Completely agree. They throttle search results. Yesterday 3 visitors, today 0, tomorrow will be 6, then 3 or 0. They take money for visits, not real customers. But once you bought an advertisement for a properly chosen audience and location, they start to bring whoever as visitor, and this flushes the budget, unfortunately. They put visitors into local information bubbles, and it is hard to get out of it for a visitor. It's like TV, those who don't trust it – never watch it. |

Hi zah21,
you just hold it wrong. Manipulation is the wrong word, cause most folks got not personalized with results but by the results. Just by the Information they offered before to the system, and then the algorithm will filter and personalize the results of some search as answer.
So sensores and data exhibitionism is the well of that sort of evil.
What i use?
Try to have Books, Links to some sources of knowledge or train your own bot, search ranking algorithm, neural Network or just follow free microblogs (and some other fediverse), or rss feeds. And just use your mind. Less Smartphones and commercial apps.
Oh i miss like CaptainBlood, i use searx as default now for a month and duckduckgo as kind of meta search engine.
I google, just 10 times in a year, use meta-Search duckduckgo like 100-times a month. Most of the time the address of programming documentation, books/epubs, Reddit, mastodon/fediverse ... |

Of course they are manipulated. How else would you buy clicks?

I've been using SearX, which is self hosted but you can find public instanaces on searx.space so make sure you trust the hoster. It basically takes search results from multiple search engines you can choose from and shows you the best results. It is great for privacy and getting good results. Since it uses multiple engines at the same time I would think it is also less biased. |
