I have been trying to get my synaptic working but without any look.
I have added all the i2c modules from kernel, my make.conf is set up, but it does not find my touchpad. Does anyone have any idea what could be missing.

MerrinX,

Do you see a loaded kernel module with "lspci -k" ? If yes, it could be a missing setting for libinput (Event interface; see link below).

I see you are using X.11 and an unstable installation (~amd64). On the other side you have old settings in:
Code:
INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse synaptics wacom libinput"

What happens if you delete them and use only:
Code:
INPUT_DEVICES="libinput"

? (of course you have to do an "emerge -uND @world" and an "emerge -c" afterwords. See also here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Libinput)

You do not yet have all the kernel modules required until the device shows up in dmesg with a line starting with "input:" after the timestamp.

On I2C based devices, the most reliable way to find out the long list of required drivers is to get a installation or live enviornment where it does show up and capture the input: lines from dmesg and compare to the non-working.

Edit: along with that, post the kernel config to some paste site to share.

Here is the config file,
https://dpaste.com/FGTQ8Q2EV

I have all the given i2c modules on, There is nothing more I can see that is related, also checked old forum posts and done what been told there, still nothing.

Until the input: line from a working install is known and posted here, it will be very difficult to advise further.

Edit: If I had to make a random guess, then this is a likely suspect:
Code:
# CONFIG_I2C_HID_ACPI is not set

This the worst kernel config I have seen for a long time ... where it comes from ? There are tons of unneeded modules enabled and really important things are missing:
Code:
# CONFIG_MICROCODE is not set

# CONFIG_I2C_GPIO is not set

# I2C HID support
#
# CONFIG_I2C_HID_ACPI is not set
# end of I2C HID support

I would recommend you to throw away this mess and do a completely new kernel configuration. First of all you should boot with our Gentoo minimal CD and ask which modules are loaded with "lsmod | more". Write all these modules to a paper for later. Then start with: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Kernel
Maybe you want read also:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Kernel/Gentoo_Kernel_Configuration_Guide
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Kernel/Configuration

(there is a list of links you may also read in my german kernel configuration guide: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1112778.html)

If I make meniconfig in my /usr/src/linux/ folder, will it then be on the config I pasted?

Quoting myself, what i mean is, if I load the config in menuconfig, add the extra features, to test. Then if I then save it, to let say kernel.config. If I then run make, will it be from that kernel.config file I just saved?

Sorry, I dont understand your question. Where is your .config from ? From /usr/src/linux ? Then, yes.

Do you need help for your kernel configuration ? If yes, you should give us more information. e.g. Do you use initramfs/initrd ? How you made and installed your kernel ? With genkernel ? How do you boot ? UEFI + Stub-kernel, grub2 ? Do you know what "~amd64" makes for your complete Gentoo (you know it is not recommended, do you?).

If you know all, then you should check if the symlink /usr/src/linux is pointing to your correct gentoo-sources of your working kernel. Maybe you have to do an "eselect kernel set X".

If you want to do a complete new kernel config, I recommend these steps:
1. Backup your current .config (to a place you want; even it is a mess)
2. "make distclean"
3. "make menuconfig"

Yes.

(Of course you must install your kernel also. Depending how you boot. e.g. "make install" and "make modules_install" and actualize your grub2 or whatever you use)

Yes.

I made the config file through genkernel, using menuconfig, then i saved it as kernel.config. Then now i interrupted the genkernel compile process after exit menuconfig, and I am in the /usr/src/linux/ directory

If I know run
Code:
 make && make modules_install && make install

Will it use the kernel.config i made and saved in menuconfig?

Yes I will update grub after all is done.

When it comes to initramfs I am not sure, I dont think so, how can I be sure?

Sorry for bothering you and i appreciate the help you are providing

I did not get it working, but I installed the bin kernel and now the touchpad is working. Will try to figure out what modules are needed and what I was missing to get it working. And try again later.
Thanks for the help

Can it be that it is the subsytems, using the intel-lpss kernel driver? it is the only differense

Will try to figure out what modules are needed and what I was missing to get it working. And try again later.
Thanks for the help

You are welcome.

Most helpful is "lsmod" and the searching in "make menuconfig" with / for the modulname. You will find most needed modules (for your I2C-touchpad) here:
Code:
Device Drivers  --->
  I2C support  --->

Device Drivers  --->
  HID support  --->
    I2C HID support  --->

Good luck.

No, it is not "can it be" - it is YES you need intel-lpss ;-)
(and also all other modules you see in "lsmod" .... LSMOD ... not "lspci -k" .... :-) it is more ... ;-) )

I will take notes and write down all i need.

I do not use a swap or encryptions, why will I need iniramfs?
If I need to suspend to disk, do I need them then?

Initramfs is needed when using an encrypted root-partition or if no individuel kernel configuration is done (so, all binary distributions must work with it; AFAIK our binary kernel use it also).
It is not needed for a swap partition. It is not needed if you do your own kernel configuration. (I dont use it also; no need)

Ok, thank you very much for your patience and help. Much appreciated, will try build a kernel getting it all working.
