|
|
A few days ago I performed an emerge world update and now I can no longer boot into Gentoo. I would post dmsg output or post logs but I can't even boot into the system so I am unsure of what I can post here to help others assist me in my issue. I did not make any changes to the kernel and it worked fine before without any errors or relevant warning messages that I am aware of. Also since I didn't recompile the kernel all required drivers should be installed and configured properly. I had not updated in about a month so the list of package updates was quite large, that is the only thing that I remember. After the updates were applied the system worked fin. It was not until I need to reboot that I noticed the issue.
Anyone know of any software updates that have caused other users issues? Anyone have suggestions?
Edit: I have changed the title from "Can't boot into gentoo" to "Can't boot into gentoo, kernel hangs while loading modules"

You can use the gentoo live cd/usb (the one you likely used to install the system.. or download a recent one) to boot the machine, mount the disk with the root partition (or /var if its on a separate partition), and retrieve the logs you need to troubleshoot. The portage log might be a good start, to recheck what you actually updated. |

I finally found the time to get around to looking into this. I am not finding anything suspect in the logs. Right now I have chrooted from a liveUSB onto my Gentoo install, now I am running emerge --sync and emerge -uDN world.
I am unsure if this will actually fix anything but it is worth a shot. |

it appears that the kernel stopped booting while it was trying to load in the kernel modules, so commenting them out of files under the /etc/conf.d/modules /etc/modprobe.d/ and /etc/modules-load.d/ directory and all was fine. I am not sure why they didn't load automatically because once I got the system running I was able to load the modules manually with the modprobe command. |

it appears that the kernel is hanging when it attempts to load the r8169 kernel module for my ethernet controller. Removing that module from autoloading I was able to boot back into my system. After booting into the system running modprobe r8169 causes the terminal window to hanIg. Does anyone know what could cause this, I didn't upgrade my kernel and I don't see anything relevent in the logs so what could be causing this?
Here is my emerge --info

What logs did you examine? In particular, did you check dmesg after the call to modprobe hangs? |

something weird is going on here. My desktop, plasma, is running very slowly. I was just about to post my dmesg output since I am now noticing error messages that I didn't see before. Unfortunately wgetpaste isn't working either so I am going to have to just post it here. I would post the entire dmesg output but the forum no longer allows us to make long posts.
The r8169 driver is for my ethernet controller not my wifi, here is the lscpi output
Code: | lspci -vvv | grep -i Ethernet

After running modprobe the only new entry that I see in dmesg are raalted to ufw.
Here is my /var/log/ directory. I really don't have much that I think would be relevant.
Code: | ls /var/log
boot chrony clamav cups dmesg emerge-fetch.log emerge.log lastlog messages nullmailer portage rc.log samba sandbox sddm.log wtmp Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.old Xorg.8.log Xorg.8.log.old

You said there was no change of kernel ... I believe ... and I think you have a hardware problem with your ethernet device OR mainboard itself (see USB error) ... I also think it was pure coincidence that it broke after you made a world-update ... |

How can I verify that? I was thinking the same so I ran memtest86+ from the Gentoo LiveUSB and I can reboot into Windows 11 or even boot from the Gentoo liveUSB with no issues. |

If you load a kernel module and system hangs, I see only these possible reasons:
a) problem with kernel (you dont have changed)
b) problem with this module (you dont have changed)
c) hardware problem
d) there was a harddisk problem ... and it affected kernel or kernel module (so its broken) (I dont believe that because you would have seen errors from your harddisk in your syslog)
If you say booting a liveUSB work, then maybe try to recompile your kernel and all modules (do a "make clean" before). IF all is working after this THEN it could have been (d) ... |

So you have the same problems as before ? What kernel version you are using ? Did your try to use a newer version ? |

I am using gentoo-sources 5.15.88. I was able to get the r8169 driver working by compiling it into the kernel now I can boot into KDE/plasma5 and I have net access but now the GUI renders very slowly, I am not sure if this problem is related or completely separate but the issues started around the same time. The nvidia kernel module seems to have loaded according to lsmod. Disabling the plasma compositor seems to have helped a little bit, changing the monitor output from 4k down to 1080 seems to have made things a little bit more bearable although it is still slow. I don't see any errors or warning in dmesg or the logs. |

<3,
What does your Xorg.0.log say?
Please share it on a pastebin. _________________ Regards,

If you give me:
- output of "lspci -k" and
- complete dmesg after system start (please use wgetpaste for this) and
- your kernel .config (-""-)
I can tell you which system you are using ... ... and MAYBE some hints to your kernel config (if I will find something).
P.S.: Yes ... xorg is the next station (if below is all correct) ... Neddy is always faster than me ... |

<3,
You have an Optimus graphics system.
Code: | [ 10.528] (--) PCI:*(0@0:2:0) 8086:9bc4 ...

The modeset driver is correctly loaded an in use, or you would have a black screen.
The nVidia driver loads too.

That's not an error. the nVidia GPU has no connection to the display surface.
Either the modeset driver and Intel GPU do everything, which is a tad slow for some workloads, or the modeset driver and Intel GPU refresh the display while the nVidia driver and GPU draw the images to be displayed.

I have configured optimus in the past. Neddy I think you've helped me before on a similar issue, maybe an update removed my settings. What does reduce framebuffer size mean? Also my system was working fine till the other day, I doubt it is my workload (loading kwin, I am not running anything but my default startup apps.) which is the problem. |

<3,
Your system shares main memory to the GPU.
Some firmware lets you set the amount of (stolen) RAM dedicated to the GPU.
If you have a setting like that, keep doubling the GPU RAM until that warning goes away.
I was thinking of the Before starting X section.
That's what sets up the nVidia GPU to do the drawing. _________________ Regards,

No, you are using 5.15.41 =>

I also asked for "lspci -k" ... the K is important ... dont worry ... I can tell you this in the mean time:
a) I have also seen you have an NVIDIA graphics and your notebook also uses the GPU of your Intel i7-10875H CPU (and this GPU is also enabled in your kernel config).
b) It is a pretty modern notebook with almost everything you need (webcam, fingerprint reader, thunderbolt, ...)
c) You have configured your kernel yourself and have used dracut for creating your initramfs. Your NVMe has 5 partitions, your btrfs is fine. You are on OpenRC and not systemd. You have an additional external keyboard and an external mouse in use.
d) Maybe your notebook has a problem with cooling. While system starts your CPU reaches max temp ...

1. Usually almost every Intel notebook needs this (low power subsystem support); except your GIGABYTE AERO 15 Studio XB/AERO would be a desktop mainboard (I dont know, but I dont think so). You should enable in every case (it doesnt harm).
2. You dont have so much RAM. It costs only performance ... for nothing. Disable it.
3. Good. Your intel GPU has all to be happy.
4. Was this a config skeleton ... ?
5. You have enabled all as a module ... so had problems with your i2c in the past ? ... and did you resolve your problem ? ... Was it your touchpad ? ... Maybe you will need only these both.
6. ... i2c doesnt work without pinctrl ...
7. Are you sure it is using LPC_SCH and not LPC_ICH ? (almost every intel notebooks need LPC_ICH ... if ever) ALSO: This will work only together with (1) LPSS
8. This is for @Neddy ... our expert for optimus (I am not).
9. You are using only simpleFB. This is okay, but if you want a better resolution in your terminal try them.
10. If your touchpad uses i2c this is additionally necessary
11. Better performance for all USB devices which are capable of this (It never harms).
12. Enable ALL Intel IOMMU options
13. Yes, no systemd !
14. This will not do anything ... if you are interested in a hardened kernel, please read:

I'm not surprised, the laptop fan is dying (It is making noises). I would send it in for servicing but they are talking about a 2 week down time I can't aafford that. My data is baced up anyways and I plan on building a desktop within the next few weeks once that new system is built I was planning on sending this laptop in for servicing. I would do it myself but the fan is behind a heat pipe and I don't want to go mucking around with that thing. It has held up for a few months like this and if it dies in the mean time that is the risk I will have to take. I do however monitor the CPU and GPU temps at all times while it is running and generally the temps are nothing to worry about. Right now lm_senors is reporting a 50 C temp for the GPU and a 26 C temp for the CPU which is fine. Until you made me aware of this issue I never realized that the temp hit 100 C during startup.

First of all I must ask: Do you have (now) any (open) problems with your notebook ? (Slow graphics?)
Second: You can see in your output 2 Controller which have no driver:

Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Comet Lake LPC Controller
[...]
00:1f.5 Serial bus controller: Intel Corporation Comet Lake PCH SPI Controller

This is fine IF you dont need a device connected to them (or if there is no device connected to). At the moment I cannot help futher because I dont know your actual situation. For an optimus configuration I would like to hand over to @Neddy ... |

Yes, I was having issues with 2d rendering in KDE/plasma. I am not sure that I understand the rest of what you said though. |
