Hello,

PCSX2 runs fine when I boot in Linux 5.15.88, but freezes when I boot in Linux 6.1.12. I tried two games and the behavior seems consistent. When in 6.1.12, PCSX2 starts fine, but when the PS2 intro animation starts (with the blue prisms and fog), the emulator becomes unresponsive and uses 100% of one thread. After a while, things move for a fraction of a second and freeze again for a minute or two.

I tried comparing the config files for the two kernels, but hundreds of options were added in version 6. How could I identify what is causing the lag?

Here is my config for version 5:
https://pastebin.com/BMLCT3fu

And for version 6:
https://pastebin.com/iBbh5bBh

Thank you for any help

You are in a AMD system? if yes, can you have fallen into this problem?

Good to know, but no, I have an old Intel i7-3770 and legacy nVidia card (lspci lists it as "GF119 [GeForce GT 620 OEM] (rev a1)").

I solved my problem! To anyone who would face the same issue, I got a warning when I updated the kernel:
Code:
Messages for package x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-390.157:

 *  CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER: is not set but needed for Xorg auto-detection
 *   of drivers (no custom config), and optional nvidia-drm.modeset=1.
 *   With 390.xx drivers, also used by a GLX workaround needed for OpenGL.
 *   Cannot be directly selected in the kernel's menuconfig, and may need
 *   selection of a DRM device even if unused, e.g. CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU=m or
 *   DRM_I915=y, DRM_NOUVEAU=m also acceptable if a module and not built-in.
 *
 * Please check to make sure these options are set correctly.
 * Failure to do so may cause unexpected problems.
 * Detected potential configuration issues with used kernel:
 *   CONFIG_FB_SIMPLE: is set, recommended to disable and switch to FB_EFI or
 *     FB_VESA as it currently may be broken with >=kernel-5.18.13 + NVIDIA:
 *     https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules/issues/341
 *     (feel free to ignore this if it works for you)
 *   CONFIG_SYSFB_SIMPLEFB: is set, this may prevent FB_EFI or FB_VESA
 *     from providing a working tty console display (ignore if unused).

I wrote it down just in case, but since I didn't notice any problem, I forgot about it. It's only weeks later that I tried playing PS2 games and noticed the lag. When I saw the message in my notes today, I simply added DRM_NOUVEAU as a kernel module, recompiled and all, and now it works just like before. I didn't need to address the second part of the warning message.
