|
|
I downloaded "install-x86-minimal-*.iso" and used Ventoy (https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy) to create a bootable USB, but I'm stuck with the following.
Code: | >> Making tmpfs for /newroot
mknod: /newroot/dev/tty0: File exists
>> Looking for the cdrom
!! Media not found
** no bootable media found. Waiting for new devices ...
>> Looking for the cdrom
!! Media not found
!! Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!
>> Determining root device (trying ) ........
!! Block device is not a valid root device ...
!! Could not find the root block device in .
!! Please specify another value or:
!! - press Enter for the same
!! - type "shell" for a shell
!! - type "q" to skip ...
root block device() ::
|
If I do the same with "install-amd64-minimal-*.iso" (i.e. 64-bit minimal ISO), then there is no problem.
Code: | >> Making tmpfs for /newroot
mknod: /newroot/dev/tty0: File exists
>> Looking for the cdrom
>> Attempting to mount media: /dev/mapper/ventoy
>> Media found on /dev/mapper/ventoy
>> Determining root device (trying /dev/mapper/ventoy) ...
>> Root device detected as /dev/mapper/ventoy!
>> Determining looptype ...
>> Mounting squashfs filesystem
>> Copying read-write image contents to tmpfs
|
Please share your suggestions on what I should try to boot x86 minimal ISO from the USB drive.

It turned out that if I use Rufus (https://rufus.ie/en/) to make the bootable USB, "install-x86-minimal-*.iso" does work as expected. That doesn't quite explain why it doesn't work with Ventoy even though "install-amd64-minimal-*.iso" works fine, but I do have something I can boot from, so I'll just leave it at that.

If you have a working Linux, you can always create a bootable USB with:
Code: | # dd if=/path/to/install-amd64-minimal-*.iso of=/dev/sdX; sync |
(use your correct device for sdX; be aware: it will destroy all existant data and partitions on this usb-stick ! Use really sdX and NOT a sdX1 or sdX2 ... ) |

I always get scared when I use "dd" to write anything to the disk (can't afford to have a typo in the command), but I'll give it a try next time. Thanks for the tip.

This is likely down to how Ventoy presents the disks and what support the kernel/initramfs contains.
Each ISO could have varying support based on what is expected on that arch. |
