I don't know... I don't like this...

Code:
emerge -av gui-libs/xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I did everything to avoid having qt, and here we go?
I just installed this mess for testing purposes.
I will definitely not keep qt in my system.

Code:
ps ax | grep portal

 4823 ?        Sl     0:00 /usr/libexec/xdg-document-portal
 4836 ?        Ss     0:00 fusermount3 -o rw,nosuid,nodev,fsname=portal,auto_unmount,subtype=portal -- /run/user/1000/doc
 4845 ?        Sl     0:00 /usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland
 5422 pts/3    S+     0:00 grep --color=auto portal

so it looks like it works, is it?

I have just gone over the xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland src and it doesn't use qt

I forgot that xdg.*hyprland has a share-picker app that uses qt.

Just install the wlr version, it doesn't pull in qt.

After you start wayland, but before you run rhythmbox, run this and post the output
Code:
ps axf -o pid,tty,args

I only care about the last part of what it puts out, especially the dbus invocation and xdg stuff

OK I'll do it next, but first, please have a look at this:

Code:
(rhythmbox:8628): Rhythmbox-CRITICAL **: 08:52:39.729: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying

phythmbox is dead :) nicotine works fine.

I'll try to install wlr, but I think we need to stop "debugging" this setup as for now.
I'll get a new NVMe drive today, so I will install a new pure Gentoo maybe tomorrow.

BTW. I tried to play CSGO2 on steam... circa 3FPS...
So my Wayland setup is barely alive:)

What I don't like is systemd and gnome-keyring - I though that if using -gnome-keyring flag will prevent it from being installed.
I hate systemd, so I am disgusted something related to it is in my system.

Another thing:
Code:
 [dbus-update-act] <defunct>

Is it normal?
And why /usr/bin/X is there? I though Xwayland is enough.

That message is probably because rhythmbox sent a messages (over dbus) and before the answer to the message could get back, rhythmbox had quit running.

I'm pretty sure rhythmbox will need xdg-desktop-portal-wlr to function properly.

As far as FPS, that could be lots of things, from the nvidia drivers to some missing piece of software or misconfiguration.

It seems that sddm is running an X session as well as a wayland sesssion, then Xwayland. gets started.

I don't know that much about sddm, my understanding is it's supposed to use wayland natively

The dbus-update-actl message is normal, I get it all the time. No harm from it.

It seems you're running several dbus instances also, not sure why.

Code:
$ psa |grep dbus
 1459 ?        /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system
17078 tty1              \_ [dbus-update-act] <defunct>
16976 ?        /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --syslog --fork --print-pid 4 --print-address 6 --session

I only have 2, the system one started when the system boots and a session bus (that I start when I log in)

I don't even use a dm to start wayland, I have a script similar to startx that set env vars and then spawns the compositor.

Don't know about gnome stuff, I know it's all tied together at some point, but I don't keep up with gnome (or kde for that matter)

Edit to add: arch linux usually has pretty good help for various things - https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/SDDM

I will do the same. All dm are worthless for me. I tested them all.

According to the man page

Code:
If DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS is not set for a process that tries to use D-Bus, by default the process will
attempt to invoke dbus-launch with the --autolaunch option to start up a new session bus or find the existing
bus address on the X display or in a file in ~/.dbus/session-bus/

So something wasn't seeing the bus addr and thus kept trying to restart it, but when it does that apps that were started previously can start behaving weirdly.
I'm not sure what's trying to restart it though.

How are you launching hypr?

I use greetd for login and then have a selection of scripts depending on the session I want
do_sway
do_hyprland
do_labwc

These each call as do_waylandenv script, which sets some key env. Finally there is the launcher, that launches via dbus: dbus-run-session -- sway

The moment you are using a WM you need to ensure the pre-req are met (something GNOME/KDE takes care of for you)

sddm.

gdm and lightdm failed to launch Hyprland

Guys, I think we need to wait until I install the system from scratch, which should happen this week.
I will install pure Hyprland. It will be loaded without any dm.
As for now it is a mess.

Maybe u all can take the issues on Wayland and apps to Desktop Environments forum...

This topic seems to have become "Why NOT switch to wayland".

Sorry, but it looks like you didn't read it carefully.
To inform you, I will install the system from scratch to have Wayland working. Isn't it a commitment to a willingness to finally enjoy Wayland? :)

I am responding to this question for myself. Plus, I am giving feedback. Not everything is OK. Some things need to be fixed.
Can you give your input? Please, be more constructive.
Are you using it?
Do you have any issues?
Thanks!

I have tried the below compositors from ::gentoo repo only.

  • Sway - tray icons appear but do not have right-click functionality (fixed in Git version iirc)
  • Wayfire - wf-shell menu tooltips flicker (yes, flicker), network icon only works with Networkmanager, no tray icons
  • Hikari - Beautiful but same problem as sway for tray
  • All of the above - do not work with ibus which is my preferred input method at the moment
  • And they all lack screensavers... which seems to be the long-term status quo

So xorg it is for me for now. Everything that I need does work there.

The waybar tray works but does not blend in with as well as the stock bars.

Never mind, I am done with wayland, until maybe libreoffice becomes wayland-only, or xorg-server gets p.masked, or some similar earth-shattering event happens.

Hah!. No.

About 8 years ago sway wouldn't work in a VM due to a DRI hardware requirement. And that was reminiscent of GNOME 3 not working in a VM for similar reasons (it ran, but not the "3-ness").

Nothing _I_ want to do with my GUI environment should _require_ special hardware or specific compilers.

The compiler version requirement is getting worse. Older versions of Hyprland still in tree only require gcc-12.1 or above. That requirement was there when Julien added hyprland-0.25.0 in May 2023 as a new package. If I read the Gentoo git history correctly, gcc-12 became stable for amd64 on Jan 23 2023; gcc-13 only became stable for amd64 on Sep 24 2023. Hyprland-0.30 was added Sep 29 2023 with the gcc-13 requirement. This is all fine by Gentoo's policy that you cannot need a testing package to install a stable package, but I can see the complaint that it is operating right at the edge.

What it really needs it c23 (c++) which is only partially implemented in gcc 12 and fully in gcc 13 or at least clang 16 (IIRC)

I had run into it a while back as I compile the git version.

Unfortunately as people rush to create new programs for wayland, this is likely to happen more often,
it's not the 1st time I've had to run ~ packages, but that's usually when running the latest or alpha/beta versions.

It's similar to some packages I've looked at emerging only to realize that I have to install and run gtk4 or qt6

Code:
gnome-base/gdm-44.1
Installed versions:  44.1^t(11:43:05 18/06/2023)(elogind wayland -accessibility -audit -bluetooth-sound -branding -fprint -plymouth -selinux -systemd -tcpd -test)
works fine here as an sddm alternative on openrc.

Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support.

Hi guys again.
I installed a fresh system, but still the same issue.
I can't run portal-wlr

Code:

$/usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-wlr &
[1] 8264
$ 2023/10/29 12:58:37 [ERROR] - config: no config file found
2023/10/29 12:58:37 [ERROR] - dbus: failed to connect to user bus: No such file or directory

Code:

$ ps ax | grep xdg-desktop-portal
 6874 ?        Sl     0:00 /usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal
 6897 ?        Sl     0:00 /usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
 6915 ?        Sl     0:00 /usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-gtk
 8328 pts/1    S+     0:00 grep --colour=auto xdg-desktop-portal

I tried to kill gnome portal with:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
sleep 1
killall -e xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
killall xdg-desktop-portal
/usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal-wlr &
sleep 2
/usr/libexec/xdg-desktop-portal &
but with no success. It is still running.
Regarding other issues, I have to install other software to check.
I was happy that this time firefox worked out of the box.
Overall I have max 2 days to configure Hypralnd
That is why I need Gnome as a backup. I have to work somewhere.
Overall, as for now, my impressions are: Wayland is not ready. Wayland is not working out of the box for everyone.
