PostPosted: Wed Sep 13, 2023 9:11 pm    Post subject: [solved] plasma KDE does not start Reply with quote

Hi there.

I got a problem installing gentoo on a new PC with nvidia T1000 card.
After installing plasma desktop with systemd i can not start KDE plasma using startx.
I believe i did not have that problem prior to adding nvidia drivers to the make.conf file.
I used i915 earlier without problems.

Thanks in advance.

On a console the output seems to be frozen with the following line:

Quote:
...[drm] [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID ....] Loading driver

However the information i am showing below i collected by ssh to this machine, i.e. sshd is started and i can connect to PC remotely.

Here is additional information which i collected:

I was thinking of turning off nvidia and use only i915. But "nvidia-smi" tells that nvidia-driver is not turned on, it is in "off" state.
I was following this cite: wiki/Hybrid_graphics#Completely_powering_down_the_Nvidia_dGPU
However after doing what they suggest the login still freezes as before.

The LINGUAS in make.conf is obsolete. Please replace it and read the localisation wiki!!!
LINGUAS="en ru"

should be LANG = "nl_BE.utf-8" and L10N = "nl en-GB de es"
in case of BELGIUM for english replace "nl_BE" with "en"

I'm using nvidia-drivers also with KDE but, SDDM.

After making changes in make.conf suggested by poe_1957 i don't see any difference.
Computer freezes where it did before.
I actually still had (changed them now) LINGUAS="en ru" in make.conf on some other two gentoo boxes.
I just copied them to the new with minimal changes.

Fitap, i don't see anything wrong in my dmesg as far as nvidia is concerned.
I did a few changes though, so here it is FYI:

Fitap, i have not, thanks.

To introduce that parameter, do i understand correctly that i have to add
one line to /etc/default/grub file: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="real_init=/lib/systemd/systemd ibt=off"
and then to reconfigure grub?

Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3 | grep 'in use'
   Kernel driver in use: i915
   Kernel driver in use: nvidia

about KDE you could try testing branch (~amd64)

Thanks. I am getting:
Quote:

lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3 | grep 'in use'
Kernel driver in use: nvidia

I don't see i915 although lsmod tells me:
Quote:

lsmod|grep i915
i915 3039232 1
drm_buddy 20480 1 i915
i2c_algo_bit 16384 1 i915
ttm 94208 1 i915
drm_display_helper 180224 1 i915
cec 61440 2 drm_display_helper,i915
video 65536 2 i915,nvidia_modeset
drm_kms_helper 204800 3 drm_display_helper,nvidia_drm,i915
drm 610304 8 drm_kms_helper,drm_display_helper,nvidia,drm_buddy,nvidia_drm,i915,ttm
backlight 24576 5 video,drm_display_helper,i915,drm,nvidia_modeset
i2c_core 118784 11 i2c_designware_platform,i2c_designware_core,drm_kms_helper,intel_hid,i2c_algo_bit,drm_display_helper,nvidia,i2c_smbus,i2c_i801,i915,drm

That means i915 is not in use...

Perhaps i need to look into intel cards.

I think that the correct option is GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

You should be able to see the past kernel's parameters
Code:
cat /proc/cmdline

Fitap, after setting up that parameter GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT i am getting the same results, console freeze.
Both ways "cat /proc/cmdline" gives the same command line.
Quote:

BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-6.1.46-gentoo-x86_64 ro real_init=/lib/systemd/systemd root=UUID=b46a4eac-d0c5-421b-beb6-08ed2a7c593f ibt=off

Edit: the only way, so far, to "unfreeze" the console is to add to grub file the following
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='root=UUID=b46a4eac-d0c5-421b-beb6-08ed2a7c593f ibt=off nomodeset splash'

then i915 is not loaded and startx does not start either.

Some progress on solving my problem is to apply "modeset" selectively.
I.e. I am turning it off for i915 but keeping it on for nvidia inside grub configuration file:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='root=UUID=b46a4eac-d0c5-421b-beb6-08ed2a7c593f ibt=off i915.modeset=0 nouveau.modeset=1'

This way startx works well, however the active driver is dGPU nvidia. i915 is not active.

Still I would like to make it active.

This seems to have morphed into a different issue - you might have better luck with a new thread... however,

It looks like this might be an optimus setup, which is a system I don't use - but there is a wiki entry that might point you in the right direction

Thank you all, i modified a bit setups i had to comply with ian.au suggestion to use wiki... Optimus.

Now my default/grub line is:
Quote:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='root=UUID=b46a4eac-d0c5-421b-beb6-08ed2a7c593f ibt=off i915.modeset=1 nouveau.modeset=0 drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1920x1080_clevo_W670SR.bin'

instead of
Quote:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT='root=UUID=b46a4eac-d0c5-421b-beb6-08ed2a7c593f ibt=off i915.modeset=0 nouveau.modeset=1'

And both cards seem to work:

Quote:
> lspci -nnk|grep -i vga -A3 |grep 'in use'
Kernel driver in use: nvidia

> lspci -nnk |grep -i i915 |grep 'in use'
Kernel driver in use: i915

I guess it will be on a software compiling level to activate NVIDIA.

One question remailns is how do i know if i915 controls my video output?
If i try to explore, here is what i got:
Quote:
> lsmod|grep video
video 77824 2 i915,nvidia_modeset
wmi 40960 2 video,wmi_bmof
backlight 28672 5 video,drm_display_helper,i915,drm,nvidia_modeset

Does it say that i915 is indeed my video card and nvidia can be used when i want to?

Some deeper digging on my side.
I have a proper edid configuration in /lib/firmware/edid/monitor.bin
so that my monitor is appropriately configured (i hope).
Modules are loaded: lsmod|grep i2c gives
Quote:

i2c_algo_bit 12288 1 i915
i2c_designware_platform 12288 0
i2c_designware_core 45056 1 i2c_designware_platform
i2c_i801 36864 0
i2c_smbus 20480 1 i2c_i801
i2c_dev 28672 0
i2c_core 135168 12 i2c_designware_platform,i2c_designware_core,drm_kms_helper,intel_hid,i2c_algo_bit,drm_display_helper,nvidia,i2c_smbus,i2c_i801,i915,i2c_dev,drm

and >lsmod|grep i915 results in:
Quote:

i915 3923968 3
drm_buddy 20480 1 i915
i2c_algo_bit 12288 1 i915
ttm 110592 1 i915
drm_display_helper 233472 1 i915
cec 69632 2 drm_display_helper,i915
drm_kms_helper 266240 3 drm_display_helper,nvidia_drm,i915
video 77824 2 i915,nvidia_modeset
drm 794624 21 drm_kms_helper,drm_display_helper,nvidia,drm_buddy,nvidia_drm,i915,ttm
backlight 28672 5 video,drm_display_helper,i915,drm,nvidia_modeset
i2c_core 135168 12 i2c_designware_platform,i2c_designware_core,drm_kms_helper,intel_hid,i2c_algo_bit,drm_display_helper,nvidia,i2c_smbus,i2c_i801,i915,i2c_dev,drm

I guess i can close this thread as solved since it looks to me that i915 is working.
