Hi all,

I'm thinking of trying Gentoo again, was wondering if/when the new LXC 6.0 LTS and Incus 6.0 LTS will be supported:

https://www.theregister.com/2024/04/10/lxc_6_and_incus_6/

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, not very familiar with these forums yet.

Thanks

What do you consider "supported"? I see lxc-6.0.0-r1 already in the Portage tree, presently keyworded as testing. I also see incus-6.0.0, also in testing.

Hi, I wasn't sure where to look. Portage tree? I'll have to read up on that.

Thanks

edit: I consider "supported" when it's out of testing, and considered stable.

Yeah as mentioned they are available as unstable packages.
https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/app-containers/incus
https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/app-containers/lxc

Generally a version is stabilized after being in testing for ~30 days, but that's a rough estimate. If the package has lots of bugs, it may not be stabilized at all.

But incus is looking great. If there are no bug fix releases (6.0.1, etc) expect a version to be stabilized around May 5, give-take few days.

Thanks, makes sense. Gives me some time to come up to speed, and get ready for it.

I'm used to Debian's unstable -> testing -> stable (LTS) model.

https://wiki.debian.org/DebianReleases

I typically run servers and firewalls on stable, and desktops/evaluation on testing. Since Gentoo is a rolling release, I'm guessing it's roughly equivalent to the Debian testing branch, which is also rolling. Works for me.

Looking forward to it.
