Hi guys, today when I was updating my kernel, I was surprise genkernel failed to generate the initramfs (I use genkernel only for the initramfs). It's the first time I see genkernel fail

Code:
alienware-m17-r3 /home/zohran # genkernel --install initramfs && grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg  && emerge @module-rebuild

Could be the same as Genkernel: ERROR: create_initramfs(): append_data(): append_
Check the log versus that other topic.

Edit And likely is by:
Code:
sys-kernel/linux-headers:  6.8-r1::gentoo (virtual/os-headers)

Building with sys-kernel/linux-headers-6.7-r1 will work.

Genkernel uses its own build file for busybox that does not include the busybox patch for sys-kernel/linux-headers-6.8-r1

Hello!

I had the same issue yesterday after kernel upgrades on two machines.

I am sure that I have updated mutliple kernels with this version of genkernel so the timing is interesting...

There is actually a bug that was opened back on April 4th: https://bugs.gentoo.org/928573 (tried unsucessfully to use the bug tag) which includes a patch that fixes this issue. If you download the patch and put it in "/usr/share/genkernel/patches/busybox/1.36.1/", the initramfs will complete properly (at least in my two cases it did).

Link to patch:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/gentoo/genkernel/43a3b450c22875fa3b553652247191e5c51eebbb/patches/busybox/1.36.1/busybox-1.36.1-kernel-6.8.patch

There is a PR already open to address this but I don't know the status beyond that.

As I don't like manually placing files/patches as that requires manual cleanup, I may make a local genkernel ebuild to do this and/or just keep an eye on things.

Just an FYI and hopefully it will help someone.

Edit/Update:
This was initially for sys-kernel/genkernel-4.3.10.
Tested sys-kernel/genkernel-4.3.11 and the patch is still necessary.
Patch was included with sys-kernel/genkernel-4.3.12.
