Hi all,

I have a bluetooth speaker that I can connect to just fine using bluetoothctl. However when I restart or logout/login the speakers don't automatically reconnect. My audio stack is KDE, Pipewire, Wireplumber. My bluetooth adapter automatically is enabled on restart, it just doesn't re-establish connections.

Code:

bluetoothctl connect 01:29:B5:21:56:9B
Attempting to connect to 01:29:B5:21:56:9B
[CHG] Device 01:29:B5:21:56:9B Connected: yes
[NEW] Endpoint /org/bluez/hci0/dev_01_29_B5_21_56_9B/sep5
[NEW] Endpoint /org/bluez/hci0/dev_01_29_B5_21_56_9B/sep3
[NEW] Endpoint /org/bluez/hci0/dev_01_29_B5_21_56_9B/sep1
[NEW] Transport /org/bluez/hci0/dev_01_29_B5_21_56_9B/sep5/fd5
Connection successful

I have set the device to trusted, which I thought should allow auto-reconnection:

Code:

bluetoothctl info 01:29:B5:21:56:9B
Device 01:29:B5:21:56:9B (public)
        Name: Audioengine 2+
        Alias: Audioengine 2+
        Class: 0x00200428 (2098216)
        Icon: audio-card
        Paired: yes
        Bonded: yes
        Trusted: yes
        Blocked: no
        Connected: yes
        LegacyPairing: no
        UUID: Audio Sink                (0000110b-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb)
        UUID: Advanced Audio Distribu.. (0000110d-0000-1000-8000-00805f9b34fb)

I honestly don't know where to begin with this one. What service owns reconnecting a Bluetooth device? Is it bluedevlil? bluetooth.service? Any advice here would be helpful.

Since You are using kde plasma maybe You would like to install kde-plasma/bluedevil
Managing speakers with graphical interface may resolve the issue

I saw here https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/334386/how-to-set-up-automatic-connection-of-bluetooth-headset that some people are using an script to connect they headsets, maybe it will be a temporary workaround for You

Also I found this https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/bluetooth_headset?ref=itsfoss.com#Setting_up_auto_connection, but it require PulseAudio so it might require switching

Hope anything above helps

Thanks for your reply. Interestingly I also stumbled across that StackExchange post is what prompted me to investigate the device was set as trusted (which it was).

I have BlueDevil installed and unfortunately it does not restore the connection state after logout.

Figured it out. Hate to say it but it was a device issue. After power cycling the device it always auto reconnects.
