Hello,

not really sure if this belongs to "kernel and hardware"...

I want to get my chromium-112.0.5615.165 working with harware accelerated video decoding (nvidia 530.41.03). This should be working with vdpau:

Code:

When uploading textures from an unpack buffer, some drivers count an extra row padding
unpackOverlappingRowsSeparatelyUnpackBuffer (OpenGL workarounds): Enabled: isNvidia
In the case of unpacking from a pixel unpack buffer, unpack overlapping rows row by row
unsizedSRGBReadPixelsDoesntTransform (OpenGL workarounds) 550292: Disabled: IsAndroid() && isQualcomm
Drivers returning raw sRGB values instead of linearized values when calling glReadPixels on unsized sRGB texture formats
uploadTextureDataInChunks (OpenGL workarounds) 1181068: Disabled: IsApple()
Upload texture data in <120kb chunks to work around Mac driver hangs and crashes.
useUnusedBlocksWithStandardOrSharedLayout (OpenGL workarounds): Disabled: (IsApple() && functions->standard == STANDARD_GL_DESKTOP) || (IsLinux() && isAMD)
Unused std140 or shared uniform blocks will be treated as inactive
vertexIDDoesNotIncludeBaseVertex (OpenGL workarounds): Disabled: IsApple() && isAMD
gl_VertexID in GLSL vertex shader doesn't include base vertex value
DAWN Info

<CPU> Vulkan backend - SwiftShader Device (Subzero)
[Default Toggle Names]
lazy_clear_resource_on_first_use: https://crbug.com/dawn/145: Clears resource to zero on first usage. This initializes the resource so that no dirty bits from recycled memory is present in the new resource.
use_temporary_buffer_in_texture_to_texture_copy: https://crbug.com/dawn/42: Split texture-to-texture copy into two copies: copy from source texture into a temporary buffer, and copy from the temporary buffer into the destination texture when copying between compressed textures that don't have block-aligned sizes. This workaround is enabled by default on all Vulkan drivers to solve an issue in the Vulkan SPEC about the texture-to-texture copies with compressed formats. See #1005 (https://github.com/KhronosGroup/Vulkan-Docs/issues/1005) for more details.
vulkan_use_d32s8: https://crbug.com/dawn/286: Vulkan mandates support of either D32_FLOAT_S8 or D24_UNORM_S8. When available the backend will use D32S8 (toggle to on) but setting the toggle to off will make it use the D24S8 format when possible.
vulkan_use_s8: https://crbug.com/dawn/666: Vulkan has a pure stencil8 format but it is not universally available. When this toggle is on, the backend will use S8 for the stencil8 format, otherwise it will fallback to D32S8 or D24S8.
disallow_unsafe_apis: http://crbug.com/1138528: Produces validation errors on API entry points or parameter combinations that aren't considered secure yet.
use_vulkan_zero_initialize_workgroup_memory_extension: https://crbug.com/dawn/1302: Initialize workgroup memory with OpConstantNull on Vulkan when the Vulkan extension VK_KHR_zero_initialize_workgroup_memory is supported.
[WebGPU Forced Toggles - enabled]
disallow_spirv: https://crbug.com/1214923: Disallow usage of SPIR-V completely so that only WGSL is used for shader modules. This is useful to prevent a Chromium renderer process from successfully sending SPIR-V code to be compiled in the GPU process.

I have a different setup than you. I won't go into the specifics but vainfo on my machine appears to look for:
Code:
/usr/lib64/va/drivers/nvidia_drv_video.so

If you have this file installed elsewhere, you might try making /usr/lib64/va/drivers/nvidia_drv_video.so a symbolic link to that file.
Possibly look for:
Code:
/usr/lib/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so
/usr/lib64/dri/nvidia_drv_video.so

Code:
 vainfo
Trying display: wayland
error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR is invalid or not set in the environment.
Trying display: x11
libva info: VA-API version 1.17.0
libva info: User environment variable requested driver 'nvidia'

Also, see:

Code:
It is possible to override the automatic VAAPI driver selection with the LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME variable:

hello, thanks for your reply.
I tried to resolve this problem now. It seems that i dont have "nvidia_drv_video.so" installed ?

Code:

MaD / # find ./ | grep nvidia_drv_video.so
find: ‘./run/user/1000/doc’: Keine Berechtigung
MaD / #

where do i get this file from?

I had to emerge libva-vdpau-driver from portage overlay, thats it. No clue why such a crucial file got removed from the official tree.

For what it's worth, this is the working ebuild from overlay, media-plugins/nvidia-vaapi-driver-0.0.9::tatsh-overlay

https://github.com/Tatsh/tatsh-overlay/tree/master/media-plugins/nvidia-vaapi-driver

Also echoing bafflement at why the keepers of the main tree do not reach out to an active maintainer, like above, instead of dropping packages. It is impossible to function without several overlays these days, including my own, just to cover software that has been aggressively pruned.

Perhaps you could convince that maintainer to become a Gentoo developer and contribute the ebuild to the main tree?

I disagree. My own overlay exists solely to manage patches that I want, but do not expect anyone else to want. I don't have any overlay ebuilds that are there because of tree pruning.

I have a similar issue.

I can't play full screen YouTube videos smoothly.
I installed media-libs/nvidia-vaapi-driver-0.0.10::gentoo
I set vaapi and vdpau USE in make.conf

Code:
vainfo
Trying display: wayland

libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib64/va/drivers/nvidia_drv_video.so

Is this egl backend (instead of direct) a problem?
Still, I have a sluggish full screen YT playback and chrome://gpu/ shows:

The issue is true for chromium and vivaldi. Firefox is fine, I have a smooth playback.

I tried
Code:
chromium --enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder

and a bunch of settings in
Code:
.config/chromium-flags.conf

Code:

--enable-features=UseOzonePlatform
--ozone-platform=wayland
--ignore-gpu-blocklist
--enable-zero-copy
--enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder
--enable-features=VaapiIgnoreDriverChecks
--disable-features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder

no success... Can someone help?

I've struggled with this quite a lot. Finally I blacklisted nvidia modules and load them manually after a reboot. Hybrid graphics here so I can boot directly into the graphics environment. It must be a race condition because before that I had to reboot quite a lot of times before it picks up acceleration.

Best Regards,
Georgi

Hello,
I ran into the same issue today. It seems I resolved it after reading this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=294879
To sum up, I installed package nvidia-vaapi-driver and added this line to the .bash_profile file in my home folder:

export LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia

I sourced my bash_profile and eventually vainfo returned this result:

Code:
chris@x-ordi ~ $ vainfo
Trying display: wayland
Trying display: x11
libva info: VA-API version 1.21.0
libva error: vaGetDriverNames() failed with unknown libva error
libva info: User environment variable requested driver 'nvidia'
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib64/va/drivers/nvidia_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_1_0
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
vainfo: VA-API version: 1.21 (libva 2.21.0)
vainfo: Driver version: VA-API NVDEC driver [direct backend]
vainfo: Supported profile and entrypoints
