Hi folks

I'm trying to install Chromium because of ALSA problems with Firefox. But it fails with messages that I can't even begin to understand (attached). What, in particular, in
Code:
 screencast? ( wayland )
?

BR, Lars.

Code:

!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy "chromium" has unmet requirements.
- www-client/chromium-126.0.6478.57::gentoo USE="X cups hangouts official proprietary-codecs qt5 screencast system-harfbuzz system-icu system-png system-toolchain system-zstd vaapi widevine -bindist -custom-cflags -debug -ffmpeg-chromium -gtk4 (-headless) -kerberos (-libcxx) (-lto) -pax-kernel (-pgo) -pulseaudio -qt6 (-selinux) -wayland" ABI_X86="(64)" L10N="af am ar bg bn ca cs da de el en-GB es es-419 et fa fi fil fr gu he hi hr hu id it ja kn ko lt lv ml mr ms nb nl pl pt-BR pt-PT ro ru sk sl sr sv sw ta te th tr uk ur vi zh-CN zh-TW"

The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
    screencast? ( wayland )

The above constraints are a subset of the following complete expression:
    !headless? ( any-of ( X wayland ) ) pgo? ( X !wayland ) qt6? ( qt5 ) screencast? ( wayland ) !system-toolchain? ( libcxx ) ffmpeg-chromium? ( bindist proprietary-codecs )

The useflag screencast requires the useflag wayland to be set

Does that mean that Chromium is a non-starter, in a system that does not support Wayland?

Using Chromium with screencast enabled and Wayland support disabled is a non-starter, whether or not the system supports Wayland. If you don't want to build Wayland support, then disable screencast support.

OK, thanks. Building now. If all goes well, I'll report back in, maybe, two days. If it doesn't get well, I might be reporting back sooner ;)

I'm considering this 'solved' because I was able to get the build to start. But, after three days of running at full capacity, and still no end in sight, I gave up, and installed a binary release from an overlay.

I would recommend using google-chrome if you want a binary version of Chromium, rather than a binary built by a stranger.

All the binaries I use are built by strangers, apart from the ones I build myself. And then I'm building them from source written by strangers.

Whom do I distrust less -- Google, or a complete unknown? That's a tricky one...

If you can't see the difference between using official Gentoo binaries from e.g. a stage3 and a random overlay, I'm not sure I can provide further clarity.
