New gentoo-forums user here. Fresh install, been on linux for years but just-recently made the switch to Gentoo.

So I have tried all three of the handbook's methods of installing steam, I am frustrated, and feel like I'm one step away from being able to get comfortable with my system, only to be basically stuck at step nine out of ten.
I followed the handbook's guide on emerging Steam. everything worked up until the point where I was to actually start the program and then it just stopped:

Code:
Couldn't set up steam data - please contact support

Nothing, no other error, no further notes that there was something important and wrong... So I tried to install the flatpak edition, it gave me this in the middle of the install:
Code:
Steam input devices udev rules don't seem to be installed.
If you experience issues with gamepads, consider installing
"steam-devices" package using your distribution package manager.
See the Steam Flatpak application wiki for more details.

after that, it still wouldn't let me set up steam.

Looking further at this link: https://github.com/flathub/com.valvesoftware.Steam/issues/1001
it seems that the issue isn't connected to my install mysteriously-refusing to even begin-preparing in the first place. There's more than likely, something within my system that I missed that is stonewalling me from installing steam.

I am frustrated. I am at the end of my rope. I feel denied of my respite over an issue so stupid and obscure and steam refuses to communicate at the very beginning of the end.

What must I do to resolve this?

Welcome Joe.

As a general rule of thumb, if you can work with portage to do something instead of around it, it will make your life much easier in the long run. With this in mind installing steam from the "steam overlay" would be the best choice, that way portage is responsible for maintaining the environment instead of you.

Tell us how far you got with this method, as it's easy to diagnose portage output.

Code:

From what similar threads seem to suggest, this error seems to come up whenever you launch the Steam client via graphical means (a .desktop file or some menu entry). Unless you've already done so and got nothing, it would be more insightful if you posted the output of running Steam via the terminal.

Could you also confirm that the following workaround hasn't worked for you? The error seems to often stem from Steam not being able to make necessary changes to your .steam directory.

@Ralphred - I ended up following the emerge method to the letter, everything installed fine, it's just that when time came to run steam itself was when I ran into problems

The link has helped! The problem wasn't the symlink issues in .steam, turns out adding exec to /home's fstab opts allowed it to run properly... But now I'm stuck at steamwebhelper crashing on start.

Terminal output of running steam:

I ended up emerging gnome-utils/dconf, and the warnings about dconf disappeared. However steam still refused to start because of webhelper having problems.
From what I can understand it might be that Vulkan is the problem. media-libs/vulkan-loader is installed, as is dev-util/vulkan-headers. I'm tempted to install media-libs/amdgpu-pro-vulkan, but that is masked.

What else am I missing?

Just enabling the vulkan use flag for media-libs/mesa will enable the equivalent of amdgpu-pro-vulkan (which is only needed for certain non-graphics related GPU roles).
What is the output of
Code:
vulkaninfo |grep -EwB4 "VK_KHR(_xlib_|_)surface"
? vulkaninfo is part of dev-util/vulkan-tools

I contributed some key information to the wiki section that regards your Vulkan errors. Please tell me how much it helps your case.

@Darkyyo, I checked out the wiki and merged it with the X, but I still got the same result of steamwebhelper refusing to run.

Have you tried deleting ~/.local/share/Steam since the fstab update?

Most googling points to needing the removal of xdg-desktop-portal*, but theses are at least year old posts/comments so YMMV with that. There were also rumblings about disabling the CEF sandbox (-no-cef-sandbox option), which made me think about underlying components chromium needs that may not be present - just installing the chromium web browser would make portage install any "missing" dependencies, there is no need to let chromium compile, just --pretend the install and see if anything smells like a JS library.

There is also the -clearbeta commandline switch; I've been trying to find a full list of switches to see if you can opt-in to the beta from the commandline, but finding a comprehensive list is a real rabbit hole I'm afraid.

Deleting ~/.loca/share/Steam and then running it again resulted in a still-nonfunctional-SteamWebHelper.
Running steam with -clearbeta and -no-cef-sandbox, both separately and together, also resulted in the same outcome.
When running a --pretend chromium emerge, I found NodeJS with the inspector USE flag as a dependency, so I emerged specifically that package to see if anything changed or worked. Same outcome again.
I Emerged the rest of the chromium dependencies (minus wayland USE flags, since well, I don't use any DEs that require it), deleted ~/.local/share/steam again, restarted my PC...

Same outcome again...

Because the steam-launcher ebuild has no checks for kernel CONFIG_[stuff], double check that part of the install instructions, or pastebin your .config and someone here will check it.
Is steam installed with the steamruntime use flag set?

I'm just trying to exhaust the "usual suspects" before we start down the strace or depgraph paths...

EDIT: This has appeared on the radar too: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/11006

I'm sorry, but things have taken a turn for the worse in a way that I have decided to cut my losses and not use Gentoo for this system (a brand-new daily-driver) anymore, and it's all my own doing.

Trying to install some software, I was using the distribution kernel, and had noticed that I had forgotten to set the proper use-flag for it. well, long story short, I did a --keep-going emerge with a few other commands that resulted in rebuilt system packages, but my system couldn't find some firmware and ultimately kernel-panicked... On top of other USE flag misuses trying to install wine, I felt like I had yarn-ball-tangled my install to hell and back on top of the issues in this thread, and I've run out of energy to deal with all the problems I had created.

Thank you for everything you guys have done, you did an awesome job despite the circumstances. I might use Gentoo on smaller projects, but right now I don't have the time, patience or energy to try and build it for a daily-driver.
