Hello guys,

Need bit of help installing Gentoo here. I first tried with gentoo live cd, only thing I changed was -j8 for make. Emerge crashed with multiple segfaults. I dropped to -j1, emerge crashed at a different package. Felt a like race condition. Seen the segfault errors on the dmesg.

I have a very bad CPU which sometimes does stupid stuff like this( 14900, thanks for nothing intel ), I assumed maybe microcode on the live GUI is not good enough for building. I tried the following steps from a working non-live ubuntu on the same hardware, still get the segfault that breaks the install process. (with -j1)

Here are the all commands I used to get to this point:

Code:

sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda
Disk /dev/sda: 465.76 GiB, 500107862016 bytes, 976773168 sectors
Disk model: Samsung xxx xxx
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: gpt

Device       Start       End   Sectors   Size Type
/dev/sda1     2048   1955839   1953792   954M EFI System
/dev/sda2  1955840 976773119 974817280 464.8G Linux filesystem
# partition the disks

mkfs.fat -F 32 /dev/sda1
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda2

mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/gentoo
cp /home/X/Downloads/stage3-amd64-desktop-openrc-20240804T163558Z.tar.xz /mnt/gentoo
cd /mnt/gentoo
tar xpvf stage3-*.tar.xz --xattrs-include='*.*' --numeric-owner

# extra steps for non gentoo install env
mount --types proc /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount --rbind /sys /mnt/gentoo/sys
mount --make-rslave /mnt/gentoo/sys
mount --rbind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
mount --make-rslave /mnt/gentoo/dev
mount --bind /run /mnt/gentoo/run
mount --make-slave /mnt/gentoo/run

cp --dereference /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/

chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
source /etc/profile
export PS1="(chroot) ${PS1}"

mkdir /efi
mount /dev/sda1 /efi

This feels like a hardware error to me. But just wanted to run it by you guys. Am I missing something, maybe a build flag?

EDIT: after posting this, tried to run same command multiple more times, one of them decided to work fine. Still I would love to hear about any ideas about segfault during emerge

Welcome to the forums.

Yes, random non-reproducible crashes are usually a hardware fault. If you only had a broken software environment, rerunning the emerge command would fail consistently. Why do you think this is a "very bad CPU"? Have you tried the traditional memtest / cpu test environments to try to isolate which component is at fault?

Thank you for the answer.

I do not game I didn't have any serious issues so far, just been reading about it, my basic Linux usage was not effected with binary distros. I guess emerge pushed it little too hard.

Please, check your temperatures, too.
