PostPosted: Wed Aug 14, 2024 7:16 pm    Post subject: [Solved] Failed to emerge sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel Reply with quote

Hello,

I have gentoo installed on a VPS and recently I have been running into some issues when attempting to update the system.
The gentoo-kernel package always fails on the same spot and after doing my fair bit of research I am at a complete loss.

I tried to manually compile and install the kernel and it works. But when emerging the compilation fails.

Any suggestions or any idea of why this might be will be greatly appreciated.

Hi!

Have you tried running make in the directory
Code:
/var/tmp/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-6.6.41/work/build
?

The build.log file seems not very detailed. Did you enable -v when emerging?

Yest I tried to run make by hand and it works. I can compile and install the kernel this way.
Although this brings some new problems like openvpn failing to compile, due to an mismatch between the installed kernel and the dist-kernel.

emerging with --verbose gives the same output

This is generally a out-of-memory condition and 649M is not a lot to compile with. You can verify this in dmesg.
Even if swap is used, a total of 2.5GiB is barely enough.

My suggestion, use a bin kernel or increase the VPS size for RAM.

Thanks for the answer.

I thought that it could be related to memory, but it still bugs me that it can be compiled by running make manually.

If emerging is not possible is there a way to let the system know that the kernel is already installed ?

Refer to the page on the wiki for package.provided.

Manual make most likely isn't using as high MAKEOPTS as emerge is. You can try reducing MAKEOPTS too.

Although and as grknight hinted, why not use the gentoo-kernel-bin package?

Code:
MAKEOPTS="-j1"
indicates, that this is ok.
I don't know if it's relevant anymore, but having -pipe in your *FLAGS increases memory usage.
Also
Code:
PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp"
is this directory in tmpfs, using memory?

I don't know if it's relevant anymore, but having -pipe in your *FLAGS increases memory usage.
Also
Code:
PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp"
is this directory in tmpfs, using memory?

Thanks for the advice,

I tried to compile removing -pipe and changing the compilation dir but still no luck.

Thanks all for the help.

It does seem that the machine does not have enough memory for the task.

I will try the advice of using the package.provided option, or maybe compile the kernel on a more powerful machine.

For the meantime gentoo-kernel-bin works.
