I will not use wayland.
I use XFCE4 desktop environment.
I do use a couple of KDE ecosystem applications like kdenlive, and QT applications like Freecad.
With tonight's sync and update attempt portage seems hell-bent on having me enable wayland support:
Code: | typhoon:/etc/portage) user% sudo emerge -uDNav --with-bdeps=y @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.
For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:

Is it still possible to use any applications from the KDE ecosystem without wayland? Or am I stuck with either pinning things to the last supported versions or finding non-KDE family alternatives?

Building in support for Wayland doesn't mean you have to use it. Some software unconditionally uses Wayland interfaces even if they aren't taken at runtime. KDE Plasma and KDE Gear still support X, but you might have to build some libraries with Wayland support. |

Ah. Then I will have to find alternatives to 'Some software' as I won't accept a buildtime, much less runtime, dependency on Wayland in any form. |

There is nothing Wayland at "runtime" just in case you are making the mistake of thinking of it like X11. |

I meant that the Wayland libraries may be used and the support may exist in the binary but it doesn't have to be used. So, when you open it on an X session, nothing Wayland happens. It's just that the libraries are needed to build against. |

Yes, I understand that building wayland specific code into libraries and executables doesn't necessarily mean any of that code will ever actually run in a pure X11 environment.
I simply don't wish for that code to be compiled in the first place, if at all avoidable. I acknowledge that in the long run this will be unsustainable as programs I currently use may chose to hard-depend on wayland in the future. With portage I can just disable the wayland use flag and portage will will either compile packages with a minimum of wayland specific code included, or refuse to compile them for me due to use conflicts.
On a brighter (perhaps stupider) note I've found a workaround for the only thing actually trying to force wayland on me: kde-frameworks/kauth expects kwindowsystem to be built with +wayland if kauth has +policykit. For now I can disable policykit on kauth and live with whatever fallout that change brings in order to avoid +wayland anywhere. |

I'm in a similar position to the OP.
If I allow wayland support for the specific package that is asking for it, can I be certain that it won't have unpredictable side-effects? I don't have any wayland libraries installed so, presumably, these would need to be included in the update. Can I be sure that won't change any system configuration?
I got bitten by this problem when I tried to allow USE=pulseaudio on a specific package, in a system that does not use Pulse. The result was pretty messy.
BR, Lars. |

For the 1000th time, no there are no side-effects. |

Not least because that's how every other distro builds stuff anyway. If anything, it's the odd case to turn it off in terms of raw numbers. |

On that note, I am running KDE, but under X, with no plans to change, and currently on my test setup I am just studying what I can trim from KDE6, which had installed a bit more than KDE5 had.
My current question is that to my understanding I do not need gui-apps/xwaylandvideobridge which is controlled by xwayland keyword for plasma-meta. Keyword description in plasma-meta says it is just for this bridge, but is it so, can I disable it with no other effects ?
BTW, it is not that I am particularly touchy about xwaylandvideobridge, it is just I am trying to understand the need for pipewire (originally my system was pure alsa, no pulseaudio, and I do not need screencast under KDE) |

KDE devs use pipewire to show window miniatures on the taskbar on wayland. And since wayland is the default now, everyone should enjoy it. |
