Have an older LiveDVD from 2017, but one of my computers has no CD drive. So thought I would update to a LiveUSB.
Use the 'LiveGUI USB' from the Gentoo download page. First I thought got a corrupted download, but have tried it twice.
1) used dd command from a Gentoo wiki: dd if=/home/decibels/Downloads/livegui-amd64-20240912T232043Z.iso of=/dev/sdf bs=8192k status=progress; sync
2) used balanaEther
3) used the KDE ISO Image Writer

Same results each time. Boots up to a console only.
I don't remember having to do anything like make a partition bootable,... before with an iso. Used to have KNOPPIX on this drive and now I'm sorry over wrote it with this.

Some info:
1) The partition table looks a little weird to me, but it has done this each time. So probably correct.
Code:
Disk model: 3200BMV External
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: gpt
Disk identifier: CC7E6982-CF85-4B4B-B338-DA43C763FCDD

Device       Start     End Sectors  Size Type
/dev/sdf1       64     571     508  254K Microsoft basic data
/dev/sdf2      572    6331    5760  2.8M EFI System
/dev/sdf3     6332 7303951 7297620  3.5G Apple HFS/HFS+
/dev/sdf4  7303952 7304551     600  300K Microsoft basic data

2) If try startx :
Code:
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error
xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "livecd:0" in "remove" command

3) sddm.log :
Code:
DAEMON: Initializing...
DAEMON: Starting...
DAEMON: Logind interface found

I was just at the Knoppix download and says can put the iso on CD, DVD or USB. So going to try it again in the meantime.

What am I doing wrong or misunderstanding?!

Thanks in advance.

**update: Just put Knoppix on the same usb drive and booted up to a GUI. Have the complete desktop. Going to do the same to the usb stick tried earlier. Did nothing special. The partitions look more normal though.
Knoppix iso:
Code:
Disk model: 3200BMV External
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x619b66ee

Device     Boot   Start     End Sectors  Size Id Type
/dev/sdf1  *         64 9035711 9035648  4.3G  0 Empty
/dev/sdf2       9035712 9066431   30720   15M ef EFI (FAT-12/16/32)
/dev/sdf3       9066432 9074623    8192    4M 83 Linux

I encountered this with the current liveusb iso dated 20240912T232043Z

out of tree kernel modules such as perhaps at least zfs were seemingly also missing on two older however similar liveusb iso's i tested released in september 2024.

It's fantastic the liveusb are included in the autobuild releases however occasionally with generated builds new major development changes will toss a spanner into the works. I like to believe more often than not the liveusb being updated has been an improvement over the previously abandoned old gentoo livedvd the liveusb replaced.

While testing one of the currently available liveusb iso's plasma did autostart using both an nvidia 1070 and 5500xt amdgpu graphics devices. Test an older iso if you encounter some unexpected bloopers :)

Thanks a lot for the reply. Thought I was missing something and couldn't find any info online.

I am going to try: livegui-amd64-20240830T150404Z.iso

Thanks again.

So that one didn't work either. I wonder how many of the iso's are bad? And who to tell?

I did jump back to the last one: livegui-amd64-20240818T143401Z.iso
and that one WORKS!

So use that one if you want it to boot up with GUI !

Thanks ali3nx!

There is a bug report. It's being looked into.
