I think we should include Full Disk Encryption to the Gentoo installation handbook, as it is very important, most users use it (I assume), and it will be easier for someone like me who is not very knowledgeable, but wants to install and use Gentoo in a more secure manner.
Might also be nice to give some tips to the users/readers at the end of the handbook like: Enable TRIM if you have SSD, Enable secure boot, etc.
I am suggesting this as I recently tried to install with FDE, but failed/messed up somewhere. I was also on IRC at the time of installation for support, but there people pointed me to different sources/wikis and methods, which added to the confusion. I am sure if this was included in the handbook, I would have a nice bootable system in the end.
Anyway, what do you guys think about this? Should:
a) the installation guide or a version of a guide exist that covers encryption?
b) we add some tips (like: Enable TRIM if you have SSD, Enable secure boot, etc.) at the end?
Thank you |

Hello!
Welcome to Gentoo Forums!
You are not alone ... maybe take a look to this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8842285.html
FDE is a security feature that is sometimes misunderstood. Do you know where it helps you = where it protects you? And what it cannot do? Are you afraid of online attacks or offline tampering?
Our Gentoo Handbook is only the starting point for further installations and should therefore not be too extensive (it is already very detailed anyway; if it were any more extensive it could be off-putting). My personal opinion is therefore that it is just right and good.
Have fun with Gentoo! _________________ https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pietinger |

I mostly agree, we don't want to bombard users with so much information that it just makes them think "Oh, this is too much! I'm out.".
Perhaps instead, a link to additional documentation could be put in place. Perhaps something along the lines of "Advanced users who wish to use additional formatting techniques can see[..]". For example, it could link them to some existing documentation like this:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Full_Disk_Encryption_From_Scratch
This is a fair middle ground I think as it would provide directions to those who want LUKS, but also doesn't bombard users with potentially unnecessary information.
Just my 2p. |

I know that our wiki editors are always happy about new users ... that's why this post was created in collaboration with them:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1165577.html
| It's not a bug though, technically.
I'd be happy to help out though, if help is needed. |
