Hello all
Can we do USE="-X" globally now? (Maybe with kde or gnome? Fedora 41 did pure wayland build, I wanna try)

Go ahead and try. It depends on what you want to run, but I expect that if it cannot work for you, then Portage will reject your request with diagnostics about packages for which USE=X is required.

I tried
Code:
 USE="-X" emerge -auvDN @world
and only the media-fonts/nerd-fonts::gentoo-zh is complaining about the USE flag.
Talking and asking seems to be a cheeper way than do it alone.
So expecting somebody who already tried this :D

What do you expect out of it? Did you check `euse -i X` already?

What did you read exactly and what do you think that means?

Of course you can...
Be prepared however emerge to request USE=X activation for some installed packages: wiki

My 2 cents is that 'Fedora 41 did pure wayland build' and USE=-X aren't equivalent:

I'd be surprised if Fedora doesn't xwayland.
They likely do no xorg-server rather.

Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support.

That package is not from the Gentoo Portage repository. Your original question did not state that overlays were in use, so I answered in the context of using only ::gentoo.

Trying it, as you did after my encouragement, seems easier to prototype even than asking. Yes, you might get someone who shows up and tells you that Portage allowed USE=-X, but that the result was miserable and you should not do it. However, short of that type of negative feedback, I am unclear what kind of answer you hope to get, since you left open whether you want to hear about KDE, GNOME, or one of the smaller projects. I am aware of some Wayland-native window managers, such as Sway. Someone happy with that might be on a "pure Wayland" setup already. There is also the question of how pure you want to be. Are you forbidding use of Xwayland, and thereby renouncing use of any applications that cannot render natively in Wayland?
