I've not found this problem on the bug tracker, so I'm assuming there's some problem on my machine.
When compiling firefox, configuring succeeds, but then compiling fails rather quickly, with
Code:
 0:36.20 /usr/bin/gmake -j4 -C /var/tmp/portage/www-client/firefox-133.0.3/work/firefox_build/instrumented
 0:36.21 gmake[1]: Entering directory '/var/tmp/portage/www-client/firefox-133.0.3/work/firefox_build/instrumented'
 0:36.21 gmake[1]: warning: -j4 forced in submake: resetting jobserver mode.
 0:36.26 gmake[1]: echo: No such file or directory
 0:36.27 gmake[1]: *** [Makefile:163: default] Error 127
 0:36.27 gmake[1]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/www-client/firefox-133.0.3/work/firefox_build/instrumented'
 0:36.27 gmake: *** [client.mk:60: build] Error 2
 0:36.47 W 0 compiler warnings present.

Weirdly, manually running /usr/bin/gmake -j4 -C /var/tmp/portage/www-client/firefox-133.0.3/work/firefox_build/instrumented at least goes past that echo error.

Here's emerge info:
Code:

I doubt this is the relevant part. We don't see what file or directory is missing. Find me the Error 1 lines, which is likely causing the Error 2.

This is totally irrelevant is it runs in completely different environment.

Just yesterday I rebuilt 133.0.3 and it built fine, today 134 is already available. But your emerge --info suggests you synced yesterday. I don't think we're so far apart that it's still 6th of Jan for you.

The complete build log is here: https://paste.gentoo.zip/3Ya3TOob
I don't see any other error except the one I've pasted in the opening post.

Yesterday I built it. What's the output of emerge -pv firefox?

Yesterday is when I noticed this problem with librewolf and today I tried firefox so I would know if the problem is with librewolf modifications or firefox fails to build as well.

emerge -pv firefox:

How do you gain root privilege? If you run a command, give me the complete command.

Code:
CFLAGS="-O3

You should not do that. It's known to be the cause of all kinds of obscure problems. I don't know if it's related, but I started to nit pick and noticed that.

I see you have it all over the place. Post your make.conf

I normally run upgrades with doas, as in
Code:
doas emerge -avuDU @world
or
Code:
doas emerge firefox
.
When I tried the gmake line from the original post, I used
Code:
doas /bin/bash
.
After that last one, env was
Code:
SHELL=/bin/bash
EDITOR=vim
PWD=/home/bstaletic
LOGNAME=root
XAUTHORITY=/home/bstaletic/.Xauthority
HOME=/root
TERM=screen-256color
USER=root
DISPLAY=:0
SHLVL=1
DOAS_USER=bstaletic
PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin
SHELL_SETS_TITLE=0
_=/bin/env

I have also tried logging directly into TTY2 as root, but the same error happened.

As for -O3, I've been using it for everything I've ever built, including personal projects. CMake also defaults to -O3 when you ask for a release build.
-O3 may have been problematic many years ago, but at this point it's just fearmongering.

My make.conf:
Code:

For the record, I did drop to -O2, but the error remained.

I bet your problem comes from the ridiculous combination of pgo and lto use flags combined with -flto and -O3 CFLAGS and running full testing. I tried to compile it myself with that soup of settings, but I'm giving up after nearly an hour for something that usually takes less than 20 minutes.

And since you mentioned having similar problems with other packages I think your problem is deeper. However it's beyond me.

You seem to be brave man, you'll figure it out.

Georgi

Condescension aside, I did figure it out and it had nothing to do with CFLAGS.
The problem was with a corrupt coreutils package. Reinstalling that fixed the problem.

Were you able to determine how coreutils became corrupt? That is a fairly important package, and if the explanation is not a local configuration error, then it is a fairly serious concern.

The whole system was functioning perfectly two days ago.
I have not touched my configuration in months.
coreutils has been merged last time on 2024-08-05T04:40:02.
However, since yesterday I have had this error.
Code:
equery check coreutils
!!! /bin/echo does not exist
* Checking sys-apps/coreutils-9.5 ...
   251 out of 252 files passed

I have no idea how that could have happened. Power failure, since my laptop battery is pretty much dead?
