I noticed a strange lets call it an anomaly although that's a harsh word, I ran
Code:
emerge -auDN @world
yesterday and I noticed that xterm and a few other packages were ready to update. Despite already syncing and updating the system on jan 3,
Code:
rsync'ed at >>> Fri Jan  3 13:05:06 2025
,
Code:
Started emerge on: Jan 03, 2025 19:10:28
Code:
*** emerge --newuse --update --ask --deep --jobs=5 --load-average=5.0 --regex-search-auto=y --verbose @world
.
Both the sync and the update command exited successfully with no problems.
I do use fcron so I thought maybe that was the culprit, so I checked the cron files in /etc and I checked fcron's configuration with fcron -e (the command used to edit the configuration). But still nothing, so I checked /var/db/repos/gentoo to see the modify dates and surely enough the latest date was Jan 7 00:00. Currently Im looking into the auto-sync option for repos on the gentoo wiki, if any of you have any idea as to whats going on Id be thankful for the explanation ty.

No, I just ran emerge -avuDN @world, the packages weren't purple or anything. Even if they were i dont think that that would be the reason.

To be sure I understand, your question is that you know you synced on Jan 3, but you have evidence that a sync you did not request occurred at a later time, and you want to understand the origin of that sync, correct? What is the output of emerge --info? Does /var/log/emerge.log mention the unexpected sync?

When using binary packages, build time dependencies are not considered. When you run a regular update, they are. What's the chance you messed with /etc/portage/package.{use,accept_keywords} in the meantime? Or make.conf?

No. He wants to know why, even though they updated the system on Jan 3rd, despite not syncing since then, today they had xterm and a few other packages scheduled for update.

Emerge --info is still useful though.

I synced on Jan 3rd, in my logs there is no mention of a sync after Jan 3rd, maybe it didnt get logged. And today I ran emerge -avuDN @world because i was playing around with some use flags, and xterm was scheduled to update to version 396 the latest. Even though I had already synced and updated the system on Jan 3rd, aka the friday of the week (i update on fridays).
This is the output of emerge --info:

Could it be your /var/db/repos/gentoo is shared with some other machine (or vm/container)?

You synced on Jan 6th. What's the output of

Code:
 grep Sync /var/log/emerge.log | tail | awk  '{ printf strftime("%c: ", $1); $1 = ""; print $0; }'

Thanks for pointing that out, so I at least know the time frame in which to look for anything, my logs dont have anything sync or portage related happening then neither is my cron scheduled to do anything, I'll see maybe I'll find something.

Thanks Georgi, the output of that command is

Fri Jan  3 13:05:06 2025:  === Sync completed for pentoo
Fri Jan  3 13:05:06 2025:  === Sync completed for guru

Still nothing my best guess is that, I synced and forgot about it and it didn't get recorded in the logs (unlikely but could happen). If this behavior persists I'll be weary and look into it again. As for now Thanks to everyone that helped me out :D

Update: My suspicions have been confirmed, it happened again.
Code:
Portage 3.0.66.1 (python 3.12.8-final-0, default/linux/amd64/23.0/hardened, gcc-13, glibc-2.40-r5, 6.1.121-gentoo-kernel-custom x86_64)

Head commit of repository gentoo: f2da40af8db526f1a0901cb9cf8d0ab1e61b8c9b

And when I run emerge -avuDN @world the amount of packages has increased again from Total: 15 packages (11 upgrades, 4 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 88735 KiB to Total: 25 packages (21 upgrades, 4 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 223104 KiB.
It 100% is syncing on its own, but what does that I dont know, I'll post again when i figure it out.
PS: /var/db/repos/gentoo's files modify dates were also changed now to Jan 8 00:00

All I can say so far is that there's been no change to anything critical (or anything at all that I'm aware of) which would start automatic syncing.

Since it seems to have consistent timing, perhaps you could provoke an error to see what program reports a problem. For example, you could leave the machine powered on, but with the network disabled, across the time of the projected next sync. If you are lucky, the originator will generate a diagnostic when it is unable to use the network. You could also try to arrange for a ps -efH or similar to be run during the next sync (with its output saved to a file for later review), though depending on how fast a successful sync runs, getting the timing right might be challenging. If successful, that should show us the emerge --sync and what started it.

This cannot happen by magic. What about automating running git outside of portage. What does git log inside /var/db/repos/gentoo say?

Code:
/var/db/repos/gentoo # emerge --info | grep Timestamp
Timestamp of repository gentoo: Wed, 08 Jan 2025 06:48:45 +0000
/var/db/repos # git clone https://github.com/gentoo-mirror/gentoo.git --depth=1
Cloning into 'gentoo'...
remote: Enumerating objects: 141197, done.
remote: Counting objects: 100% (141197/141197), done.
remote: Compressing objects: 100% (109087/109087), done.
remote: Total 141197 (delta 38662), reused 80561 (delta 31095), pack-reused 0 (from 0)
Receiving objects: 100% (141197/141197), 71.78 MiB | 6.59 MiB/s, done.
Resolving deltas: 100% (38662/38662), done.
Updating files: 100% (122903/122903), done.
/var/db/repos # emerge --info | grep Timestamp
Timestamp of repository gentoo: Wed, 08 Jan 2025 10:18:44 +0000

Best Regards,
