Hello forum, I am so close to having a final Gentoo intallation, but, as per the title, there is one more issue I am dealing with:

when running startx I get the message: xf60OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console (Permission denied)

I installed xorg and xfce, then, as per the wiki, I echoed
Code:
"exec startxfce4" > ~/.xinitrc

as a non-root user, and issued the command startx, with the above message. Here is the log of my xorg file: http://dpaste.com/7QWWDEHCF.

I read many threads regarding startx, but none was helpful. I am also aware that, as per news item n°4, starting 2020-7-15, stable xorg server will default to using the logind interface instead of suid by default. I have a desktop profile, and still enabled elogind globally, but this did not help.

Any help is much appreciated.

P.S.

I have also run:
Code:
rc-update add elogind boot

and tried with
Code:
exec dbus-run-session <WINDOW_MANAGER>

where I wrote openbox as my window manager after installing it, still, no luck...

Does this article help? https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Non_root_Xorg

Also, did you set any USE flags for x11-base/xorg-server?

Hello loravis,

I set the following useflags: X elogind dbus.

I will have a look at that wiki...

I had actually looked at that wiki, and found that when I issue the command
Code:
logingctl user-status

I see root instead of user (1000):

Code:

loginctl user-status
root (0)
         Since: WED 2025-10-15 13:10:00 CET; 1h 28min ago
         State: active
      Sessions: *1
        Linger: no
          Unit: user-0.slice

This could likely be the problem, but I do not know how to fix it...

Just to see if adding a dispaly manager worked, I emerged lightdm as per the wiki, and followed all the steps shown there, but, upon reboot, I get to a black screen...

At least, before I booted into the console, now it is even trickier...the problem is...I do not know what the problem is...I followed every step as per the Xorg, DE and display manager wiki, but I got myself into a dark corner....

I had to chroot and delete dispaly-manager from the runlevel default, which allowed me to reboot into the console with the prompt. Now I am patiently waiting for someone more knowledgeable than me on how to proceed...
