I just had an idea ...

As a name for these "Audio Broadcast" items in gerbera i used names like "Test", "Testaudio", etc. VLC seems to threat them as filenames and filter on file types (extensions) it knows. So now i created a new one called Test.wav, and guess what? It shows up in VLC and when i click it, it plays. While it's nice it works now, it doesn't make sense to me, because it's not a filename and it actually has a mimetype of audio/x-wav which should be a clear indication of what it is.

Problem solved :)

To the best of my knowledge there is no software that would sit between mpd (output) and a receiver (input) by way of upnp/dlna.

As far as gerbera, I'm using minidlna, so don't know much about it.
Glad it works for you.

The gerbera way of doing this works now, so i don't need something between mpd and the receiver anymore.

I also found a setting in VLC in the playlist section. It is called "Show hidden files" and if it is switched on it also displays my stream if i call it just "Test" like i did before, so that's an other mystery solved :).

I do have to say is that while i like the functionality of gerbera, it's stability is very bad. For example entering a mime type it doesn't know makes the Web UI crash.

If you find that Gerbera's lack of stability is becoming too problematic, something you might like to try - which i've not tried myself! - is to use MPD's Pulse or PipeWire output plugin together with pa-dlna.

Thanks for the tip, i haven't looked at those because i hate pulseaudio with a passion ;). Pipewire seems acceptable so i'll check that out.

One more oddity to add with gerbera and VLC:
When in VLC the "Show hidden files" is unchecked, so only known "extensions" are displayed, and in gerbera i rename an item from "Test" to "Test.wav", it still isn't displayed. I have to delete the old one and create a new item with the correct name before it shows up, renaming an item works but it still isn't shown in VLC (even after a restart of both).
