I logged on to my username this morning and everything behaved as normal. I left the graphics environment leaving myself logged in and came back after lunch to find that there was only 1 workspace, the cursor was a cross, and there was only 1 window in the workspace when there were 2 before. I've deleted .config/xfce4 to see if I could start again but it made no difference. The alterations to Window Manager in Settings have gone as well.
What do I have to do to get things back as they were? Nothing I try makes any difference.
Gratefull for all advice... |

I should have waited a bit for the gears in my head to engage... I'd made my weekly backup this morning so I have deleted everything under /home/user/ and copied it back from the backup. I have got the 4 workspaces back but the terminal windows have to be added again -- the cursor is back as well as the panel at the top of the screen.
Sigh of relief... |
