I've got a brandnew AMD64 on an MSI-Board / SATA harddisk and I am trying to install gentoo using the livecd image
livecd-amd64-2004.0-rc1-20040201.iso
(the one listed on http://dev.gentoo.org/~brad_mssw/amd64-tech-notes.html is not available any more and the other one seems rather old)
Unfortunately, booting hangs at "step5a filling file system". It looks like the SATA drive is found correctly.
Booting Knoppix with kernel 2.6 also detects the hardware correctly.
Is this problem known to anyone? Any suggestions or links to different images to try?

Inspired by a bug report, I tried to do a memtest (ver 3.0). It simply crashes (causing a reboot) with any combination of my memory modules.
Does this mean they're broken / unsuitable or does this mean memtest86 doesn't work for 86-64? |

| I found turning on ECC for my ram helped with the memory problems (running memtest) but I don't know that'd help with booting hangs |

Try this on startup:
That has helped others, I didn't have a problem with my Gigabyte K8N Pro board.

I think the above is a typo, try...
That should do the trick when booting off of the CD.
I have the MSI K8T Neo board and found that after getting everything installed I was able to boot without needing the idle=poll in my grub.conf as long as "USB Device Legacy Support" was "Disabled" in the "Integrated Peripherals" section of the bios. |

I've tried turning anything of on the command line (including idle=poll). The result ist the same.
The same I've turned of any feature in the BIOS that doesn't seem necessary for me (1394, usb, serial, parport...)
Has anybody got a positive on trying the new livecd image with an MSI Neo K8T? Or has anybody got the older image announced on the AMD64-tech-notes page? That would be something I'd like to try.
Although I'm still not sure if my mem is all right (Knoppix works just fine with it, but memtest hangs. BTW, I can't turn on ECC support in my BIOS). |

| hi, i have got a similar problem too. my mainboard is a gigabyte k8vt800 and it crashes when i try to load the gentoo install cd. the option idle=poll doesnt work, replacing the ram doesnt work too. its gonna be frustrating. btw freebsd crashes too. |

Have you been able to solve that problem? Or has anybody else got a Gigabyte K8VT800 to run with Gentoo?
Just asking because I'm going to buy this board tomorrow

| I have read that memtest has problems with amd64 and that the updated memtest86+ v1.11 from http://www.memtest.org/ is preferable. memtest86+ works on the Asus SK8V while memtest seems to hang. |
