I have a strange error. How I got here is a long story but I'll keep it short. I emerged an update recently and hotplug thoroughly borked up my kernel (2.4.22-gentoo-r5 and r7). Kernel panic on boot. Something about can't find /proc/bus/input/devices I did the troubleshooting and found out it was a bug, so I tried downgrading hotplug that didn't work. Since it was an actual bug with hotplug I knew I would be stuck waiting for others to fix it. I like being able to plug in devices like my camera, or palm via usb and having it recognized automatically so getting rid of hotplug is not a good option either.

I decided to roll with it (I heard hotplug worked well with the 2.6 kernel) and upgrade to kernel 2.6 (ck, tried mm but there was no supermount), I do have pnp enabled in the kernel as well as neomagic fb, and acpi. If anyone knows for a fact that that these are problematic let me know please. The system now locks up on me regularly. It usually happens when I switch from xdm to a virtual console and run a few commands. Sometimes it happens when I don't switch virtual terminals. It says something to the effect of unmount filesystem and crashes. The message from the critical logs is:

[kernel] Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address d2c000

My hotplug version is 20040105.
Computer is a TP 600
Kernel 2.6.2-ck

If anyone could point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this I would appreciate it.

Try to see if the vesa framebuffer fixes this (Nvidia card users sometimes have this problem with the riva framebuffer), or if you have an ati card, try also one of the ati framebuffers (this is in the kernel configuration)

hotplug doesn't work well for my PocketPC ... and I'm with 2.6

That did the trick I switched to vesa framebuffer instead of neomagic. TP 600's have a neomagic 128x chipset so its very odd it won't work. Now if I can just get sound working, stupid cs4237b chipset. What did you mean by hotplug isn't working too well in 2.6?

It means I am not a hotplug freak enough to make it work correctly with my iPaq

Got sound working by disabling pnp in the kernel :D . Good luck with hotplug and that IPAQ :), maybe the next ver will play nice.

Gah! I spend weeks trying to make my cs46xx modules load on my HiNote laptop, and the solution is as simple as disabling pnp in the kernel. Unbelievably nobody anywhere else suggested that. Saw what you wrote and that you were using 46xx (4237b, same as mine); disabled, rebuilt kernel, modprobe and Bing! :D

Of course I came across your post while trying to solve something else....

Doh!  8O :D

Yeehaa!

BTW I get the same kernel paging request errors with the neomagic drivers on my Digital Hinote laptop; that was what brought me here - although I'd pretty much figured it out by the time I saw this thread.
( 2.6.5-mm6 and neomagic 128 )
