ASUS K8V shoul work but...

Hello to everyone!

I have a brand new Asus Motherboard K8V for my brand new Athlon K8

I tried to install Gentoo on this new PC but I got the following problem:

with my stable-gentoo-release-cd i am not able to insmod sk98lin as the network driver.

In some Gentoo forums i saw that this is the driver for this card, since the original one is just a slight modified version of this one. Unfortunately the driver won't load at all saying the usual stuff (device not present etc. etc.)

Does someone has experience in such a problem?

if i understand you right, you want to make a 64-bit install? if so, you may have the wrong live-cd, afaik there is no stable live-cd for 64-bit gentoo at this time...i've got the same board, and it worked flawlessly for me (but i never tried to do a 32-bit install)

Yeah, you'll need the gentoo-dev-sources. Thankfully my new machine had a CD-RW on it, so after downloading a shareware CD burner (that had the ability to burn raw images) I got myself a LiveCD.

I just downloaded the livecd-amd64-20040223.iso
and even if it misses some features such as keymap selection etc.
I was able at least to start the installation process (which was previously compromised by the ethernet driver not willing load).

Unfortunately i had to stop at bootstrap because package binutils seems to enter in a kind of loop during configure and after a while i need to force it to stop.

But to tell the truth, i still don't understand the whole picture.
will amd64 use 64 bit integerss or still 32 bit integers? If it supports only 32 bit then it means it is only some kind of upgrade to the drivers...

Can someone explain me what is going on here? :roll:

if you use the amd64 live-cd, you will get a full 64-bit system, so it will work with 64-bit integers (but this can depend on the source code)
what do you mean with a loop while bootstrapping? any errors displayed?
have you read http://amd64.gentoo.org? if not, please do so, because on your hardware, the installation should go rather smooth...

Actually it didn't display any error but it seems that configuration of the package never ends. It keeps displaying the same configuration steps for minutes and it never starts the real compilation of binutils.

After a while i have to stop the process...

hmm...i suppose your pc is rather new, so i would run memtest, just to be sure there is no memory related problem...can you tell us at which step the configuration fails, maybe with the last few lines of output? you could also try to wait a bit longer, maybe i just needs some more time..

I have this mobo and amd64 live cd works fine.

If you want to install using the live-cd 1.4 it is also possible however this will mean your OS is not using the amd64 processor to its full capabilities. You'll need to d/l the lan & SATA drivers to get it to work (if you are using SATA) they are available at http://www.asus.com/ , these will need compiling and inserting into the running kernel. You can then continue to install your 32bit OS

I have problems with my 64bit installation as I havent found a driver for the ATI 9800.... and ATI are no help when it comes to x86_64. However that is the only problem at present and the Asus K8V has all the drivers you need available in the kernels at 2.6 level. Installed with ease first time of asking

If you want any help with your configuration let me know! The most useful thing would be to see your /etc/make.conf
