The reason I ask is because I have one that is a picture of me....and I don't know how much I'll have to shrink it (Its high resolution)...I don't want to shrink it too much. So if somebody can tell me the max length and hight that would be great. Thanx!

About avatars...and I'm sorry if this is off topic, but it seems to fit in the thread...why isn't the avatar size upped to 14k max? The guildlines say avatar+sig picture should be no larger than 14k max. Since sig pics have been disabled (or are bugged, but outcome is the same), why can't the avatar be larger?

I gots a really nice 12k picture I want to use

Use gimp to save it as a png or jpeg with higher compression (to make it smaller). My avatar is 6.17kb.

I saved it as png, with compression lvl 9, and pngcrushed it. Before it was 20kb.

Maybe jpeg instead? I don't know what you tell you except it's 100% possible to get that image down under 7kb ;)

Wow...I didn't know jpegs used such good compression! The thing's at 6kb now, with no apparent loss of quality.

The key word being apparent. PNG images are losslessly compressed, unlike JPEG. Same thing as the difference between ogg/mp3 and flac/shm.
On that note, I too wish the avatar size limit was upped. I have an image that I want to have transparency in but the smallest I can get it to is ~11k. The GIMP apparently reduces the alpha channel to 1-bit when making the palette indexed so the result is very jagged edges. :x So unless someone knows a way to get a true alpha channel with indexed color, then I see a definite need for larger avatar file sizes.

edit: I managed to greatly reduce the file size by decomposing the image, posterizing the alpha layer to 8 colors, and composing it back together. Posterizing the actual image might be needed too. After a good pngcrushing it is 5689 bytes. In the end its not lossless, but it does have nice edges.
