|
|
I would like to setup my Gentoo server as a wireless access point. I would like to know what 802.11g wireless cards are compatible with the 2.6.1 kernel. Also, I was planning on using the card in Ad-hoc mode to implement the access point, is this a good idea? How secure is this? What kind of software will I need to route connections and handle security of the access point? This same host will eventually be a firewall and GigE switch as well.
Any links to docs, how-tos, or messages threads is much appreciated.
Thanks again,
shon |

Hi!
I have setup one gentoo box as accesspoint.
Card: SMC2802W
Driver: prism54.org
Kernel: 2.6.3-rc1-love1 (drivers from prism54.org included)
The docs at prism54.org are quite good, no problems with the setup.
Works too with 802.11b cards (cisco, draytek) without problems.
You should at least
- activate 128 bit WEP
- only allow known MAC addresses to connect
- change the WEP key regularly
HTH
