I'm a n00b to gentoo, but not to linux. Rather than upgrate for RH 9 to fedora, i figured i'd make the plunge into gentoo. I've done some searching on the forums here, but can't find anyone else with this problem.

I have a IBM Thinkpad with the i830 chipset. When running RH8 and RH9 X worked beautifully, I never had an issue during setup or anything. Unfortunately things are not so nice this time around. Last night I started my gentoo install from the CDs, starting with stage 3. The cd's were downloaded about 2 months ago or so, I was just to lazy to install them, so the portage tree is a bit old. The kernel I compiled with genkernel was 2.4.20-gentoo-r6.

Anyway, my problem is that X won't run at all. I just get an error that states "no screens detected" or something like that. I'm posting at work becuase i can't get to the net at home, so i don't remember the error exactly. The funny thing is that I even tried using the XF86Config file that RH9 generated and i still get the same error. Is there some setting or driver I should check?

Everything is default gentoo settings from the pentium 4 stage 3 cds. I haven't done any tweaking yet. I followed the install directions to the letter (except for using different partitions). Everything installed fine and i got no errors except for X not running.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you already tried remaking your XF86config from scratch? I mean, using the script provided (xf86config), and playing with the values (horizontal and vertical sync, and others)... I have a laptop too, with the same chipset (HP Omnibook XE3, with i810). If u want, I can post my XF86config here, so you can try whether it works for you.

yeah! that would be great if you'd post your XF86Config file. first i did try using the program in gentoo to make the file and when that didn't work i used my old one. i tried a couple of permtations of video memory and sync rates and such with no luck. hopefully you're file will work.

Usually problems like that come from dri/drm. Disable both in your kernel, and also comment the lines for both and the line "Mode = 0666" at the end of your XF86Config file. It should get you working

Note that I have enabled DRI. If you haven't, just comment the very last lines (from Section "DRI" on), and also comment the load dri and load glx at the beginning of the file (Modules section). They are the modules for 3D rendering.

Just an update for anyone else who may have problems:

Even with dlworld's contribution of his XF86config file, i was unable to get X to start on my laptop. I spent about 2 weeks with it and finally gave up and switched to fedora core 1. I hope to try gentoo later and mabye this will all automagically be fixed.

If anyone else out there solves this problem, please post the solution, there's at least one other person out there that would like the answer.

I also have same kind of problem. I have HP xe3 and i tried the conf file supplied here.
I fixed the problem using the VESA driver. However now my gentoo is really slow. I mean if you compare it to debian I had before it's like snail. Could this be because of the VESA? Or is Gnome just too hard fro my old laptop. I had KDE on on Debian.
