hi
you have to choose between the xfree-drm or ati-driver solution.
this are the board-types that are currently supported by the ati-drivers:
Code:

         - ATI Radeon 8500 / 9100
         - ATI FireGL 8700 / 8800 / E1
         - ATI FireGL T2
         - ATI Radeon 9000
         - ATI Radeon 9200
         - ATI Radeon 9500
         - ATI Radeon 9600
         - ATI Radeon 9700
         - ATI Radeon 9800
         - ATI FireGL Z1 / X1 / X2
         - ATI Mobility M9
         - ATI Mobility FireGL 9000
         - ATI Mobility M9PLUS

When it comes to 3d-performance i would choose the ati-drivers. In your case ati-drivers are not an option, but the xfree-drm is often a good choise because it runs pretty stable.

I have radeon 7500 mobilty like you

and its work very fine (with direct rendering)

to support direct rendering you have to upgrade to XFree 4.3.99.902-r2 (in the portage)

after upgrading type
Code:

opengl-update xfree

Then to see if you have direct rendering type :
Code:

glxinfo | grep rendering

note : you don't need xfree-drm anymore
