I had never problems compiling KDE before on my Gentoo machine. Yet today, I'm running my head against walls here...
Emerging kdebase 3.2.1 constantly freezes my machine. When I say freeze, I really mean FREEZE. I am running nothing else but the naked system while emerging. I stopped all services, not even XFree is running.
I'm using no extraordinary flags in my make file.
I don't specifically expect any hints from you because I know it'd be hard to give me advice. Just take it as a hint to anybody wanting to emerge KDE should know that there can be trouble.
I'll guess I'll just leave it that way and wait until the next release and hope for the best. Luckily I don't use KDE that often.
regards,

I am also having some *freeze* troubles.... which kernel do you use? I am running 2.6.4-mm (latest) and I think this kernel is making problems due to all the optimization settings I've done (found on the forum...)
Does this merge fails on the same line always? _________________ LinuxUser: #310384 |

I am using the current Gentoo sources. This should be a 2.4 kernel.

No. That's the funny thing. It seems to have a slight random character.
At first I thought my machine is overheating but a quick look into the BIOS tells me that it is barely above 40celsius.
This is definetly a compiling related problem but I'm too tired to find out what it is. I had problems with KDE in the past that it would freeze at some point but eventually I always succeeded in compiling it. This time I get 100% freezes with the kdebase ebuild. The rest before that went fine.
The drawback is that I have now an inconsistent KDE build with some ebuilds from 3.2.1 and some from 3.2.0.

CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
and
CFLAGS="-O3 -march=athlon -funroll-loops -pipe"
shouldn't be too aggresive.
By the way, I tried emerging kde-base over night and it finally succeeded... after the tenth try. This is the hardest KDE build yet on my machine...
But something is generally wrong with these KDE builds since they tend to make more problems than anything else.

This seems a bit strange. I've never had my machine freeze on emerging anything, but I've certainly noticed that KDE takes a lot of power to compile -- they probably use quite complex cpp.
My guess is that your problem is hardware related. Maybe not heat alone, but maybe heat + ram errors + other small hardware bugs + underpants gnomes + small hard drive failures + bad luck. _________________ Excelsior! |
