When my systemt tries to boot to install, I get this message...
Code: |
ISOLINUX 2.08 2003-12-12 isolinux: Loading spec packet failed, trying to wing it...
isolinux: Failed to locate CD-ROM device; boot failed.

The CDROM is being picked up just above this by the system. So I'm not sure what the deal is here. Can anybody help me? I really want to get into Gentoo. |

Which kind of box is that? Is it a laptop (Sony Vaio maybe)? Looks like the BIOS initializes the CD-ROM which is enough to boot from it, but linux doesn't recognize it later. Either that or your disk has some bad errors. |

It's an old 180mhz desktop. I've run a number of other Linux distros on it and have never had a problem with hardware detection. |

Is it an IDE CD-Rom or it's one of the older CD-Rom's that require special drivers? If it's the later you may need a special kernel to boot in order to be able to access it after that. |

I'm pretty sure it's IDE. I mean it's worked with everything else with no problem. |

The easiest work around is installing from Knoppix as it has very broad hardware support. Just download Knoppix's ISO, burn it and it should detect your CD-ROM flawlessly. Then follow the instructions on how to install Gentoo from a Knoppix CD. |
