I'm a Gentoo newbie, trying to install the 20030910 release on a Dell D600. With many fits and starts, I've got the base system installed and happy, and X seems to be working fine. Now I'm trying kde, which fails to install very consistently.
The error belch starts with:
make[2]: *** [kio_ghelp.la] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/kdelibs-3.2.0/work/kdelibs-3.2.0/kdoctools'
... and then:
!!! ERROR: kde-base/kdelibs-3.2.0 failed.
!!! Function kde_src_compile, Line 128, Exitcode 2
!!! died running emake, kde_src_compile:make
The forums indicated lots of people having similar problems -- most seem to do with missing dependencies -- but the only one I found referring specifically to this recommended emerging jpeg prior to emerge kdelibs. Been there, done that, still no joy.
What is line 128? What is kio_ghelp.la? How do I make this go away?
Thanks -- mf

Here's an update on the situation:
I tried emerge -Uuv world, to bring everything on the system up to date, followed by etc-update. That all seemed to go smoothly.
But emerge kde still bombs in exactly the same way. |

Next update:
Ok, based on this bug report:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41432
I downgraded qt to qt-3.2.3 from qt-3.3.0-r1. This had the interesting effect of shifting the bug slightly. It now crashes on libartskde.la instead of kio_ghelp.la. The output is now very similar to Kahless's post (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=138326&), but bombing on Line 128 still instead of Line 127.
Out of the frying pan, into the frying pan... |

Ok, next act in the drama:
Based on a comment in this link:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=136531&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=kde+3+2&start=25
I tried removing and re-emerging arts, and then attempting kde:
emerge -C arts
emerge arts
emerge kde
This moved the ball forward, but only a little bit. Now the crash occurs on
make[4]: *** [fontthumbnail.la] Error 1
make[4]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/kdebase-3.2.0/work/kdebase-3.2.0/kcontrol/kfontinst/thumbnail
At least it's progress... |

It's working!
A recap:
emerge kde
STATE: kio_ghelp.la error. This seems to be the fault of qt-3.3.0-r1. Solution: first clean everything and make it new -- just to be absolutely sure:
emerge -Uuv world
etc-update
emerge sync
STATE: same, I think, but I feel better about it. Now downgrade qt:
emerge -u qt-3.2.3-r1
emerge kde
STATE: libartskde.la error.
emerge -C arts
emerge arts
emerge kde
STATE: fontthumbnail.la error
emerge freetype
emerge kde
STATE: success! |
