No terminal on xvnc session

In this topic there is a great guide to using the VNC server. I have everything working on a Gentoo computer that has a fully functional X environment (Gnome 2.4) including working terminals (gnome-terminal).

When I log on to that computer thru vncviewer however, I get the gdm login screen and I can logon to my desktop, but I can't open any terminals. As if no pty is available..

I tried a search for this problem, but it gets a bit flooded by irrelevant findings because of the rather generic search terms (vnc, pty, xterm, terminal and such)

Does anyone know what's going on?
