Now that X works, it's time to try to set up some DE, but which?

I recall hearing that KDE is "default". If so, then which version?

I'd like a DE that is common - to avoid problems of "exotic choices" - and I'm planning to use embedded programming tools - if some
DE is better supported than others.

There is no Default DE in Gentoo... there was a bad review, in the sense of "facts", that claimed this.

It is totaly your choice. Gentoo is all about Choice!

This said, I prefer KDE.

I think I'll be moving to Mate from xfce.

Speaking of KDE... it's been years since I used it, but what I hate about KDE in the LiveDVD installer is the fact that doubleclicking window titles spreads the window to total virtual desktop size on dual-monitor setups, instead of just the screen it was double clicked in. Probably not the best place to ask (this thread) but is that "normal" for KDE or is it in the way LiveDVD's KDE is configured? I'd like to try out KDE 5 (yes, I know LiveDVD is 4) but not if it's not suitable for multimonitor setups like that...

OK, looks like the distribution is quite even.
I guess KDE 4 would be as good as any. I guess newer would be begging for trouble (as a newbie in Gentoo and KDE).

I guess I better mark this thread as solved, before the DE-religious wars begin. ;-)
(Some comments hinted that something like that could happen...)

Good choice, turboscrew. :)

If you're not familiar with KDE, you can get a flavour from the following articles I wrote about earlier releases of KDE 4 that are essentially still applicable and may be of some help:

o Pimping my Desktop: have KWin Desktop Effects improved in KDE 4.6.2?
o A guided tour of my KDE 4.8.4 desktop (Part 1)
o A guided tour of my KDE 4.8.4 desktop (Part 2)
o KDE Connect – Link your Android device to your KDE desktop

EDIT: I'm currently using KDE 4.14.2 with ~amd64 Gentoo and it's working very well on my laptop.

Even though this has already been marked as solved, I'll throw my two cents in.

I don't see any reason to just choose one. I had at least 5 at one point, including gnome 3 and KDE before I discovered that i3 fit my workflow best.
