|
|
Hi,
I just got an old i486 laptop with 8MB RAM and 80MB HD. It's got a floppy and serial/parallel ports. How can I install a minimal gentoo on it? I could hook it up with a nullmodem to my desktop machine, but how do I get the base system installed? Are there any floppy images around?
Thanks,
Dirk |

For boot diskettes, this one is popular.
As for installing with 8 megs of RAM, I think you'll run into problems.
Here is some info on building with minimal hardware. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Thanks, the idea of compiling and then installing to the laptop disc is great. I think I'll do that. Now, 8MB should be enough, isn't it? |

I think 8 will work. As long as you don't plan on running X (or X apps).
EDIT: You may see alot of swapping though. Depends on what you do with it. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

No X, I just want to have a computer that I can connect to the net and fetch and send email. I don't even need a compilter. mutt and vi should be ok.
I used to run Linux on a 486/33 with 8MB just fine, but that was before kernel 1.0 |

If you want to run Gentoo, you do. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |
