Mate Desktop - Remote Desktop & Shutdown

I have just completed a fresh install of gento and mate-desktop.
The menu item System->Preferences->Remote Desktop is missing.
The menu item System->Shutdown is missing.
Did I miss something ?

Do you have dbus and consolekit running?
Are you using a display manager to start the mate session?
If using startx did you added "ck-launch-session" and "dbus-launch" to ~/.xinitrc?

As root before startx,

/etc/init.d/dbus status
* status: started

As a normal user, I tried this in my .xinitrc
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch mate-session

No system->shutdown menu item appears

Interesting, if I run startx as root user, the system->shutdown menu appears and is funtional.

Another observation is that hitting the power button shuts down the computer (either as root or as a normal user) where as the old gnome 2 would bring up a dialog and prompt you for the root password. I would like to have the prompt back.

I'm still not sure what has happened to system->preferences->remote desktop, is this provided by "vino" and does it work with mate-desktop ? In any case I can use tigervnc server for now, although it's a bit buggy.

If it's working as root it must be a permission problem somewhere.
I have a mate desktop running with a functional shutdown menu but as I want a *kit free system I have patched mate-session-manager to use pm-utils and sudo for shutdown, restart, hibernate and suspend.
If you can't fix your problem and want to try my patched version you can get the ebuilds from my overlay http://k6.tuxhome.com.ar/repositories.xml
