how did you configure X ?
try to run
and check if Xfree picks up the correct driver savage or s3 afaik
all ebuilds of Xfree incorporate savage drivers by default. |

Older S3 cards are more difficult (Trio/Virge).
It's a lot of work but quite simple to use the Xfree 3.x S3 drivers in Xfree 4.x.
I've seen instructions in these forums. If you can't find them, I'll post them later today. |

Repeat
I emerged --buildpkgonly Xfree 3.3.6 (ebuild; https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1186 ), extracted the tarball and copied the X server to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_S3. Symlink this file to
/usr/X11R6/bin/X.
That's it, except you need your X-config file here: /etc/XF86Config instead of the usual location.
[edit]
Klovnen: I don't know about dual setups; never tried that.

I can't believe it!
I got mit S3 Twister running on XFree 4.3 . I just had to insert the agpgart module correctly with included support for my AGP controller provided by the via_agp module and then follow these instructions:
http://sxs.thexdershome.com/guis/DRIS3.html
It worked with the savage.ko module available there.
But I wonder why I could not find the link to that site in these forums but had to look for it at google.
I hope I've helped you! |

For S3 savage cards, you can get 3d hardware acceleration support using the DRI cvs, just follow the instructions here:
http://dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/Building
and remember to add savage to the appropriate place in host.def so te driver gets built. Then install, modprobe the savage drm module that you built, and change the driver line to savage.
raoqn, do you know which S3 card you have? |
