|
|
Audio output from my two week old Asus X99-A based system has stopped. It is a dual boot system and sound works when booted into Win7 so I don't think there is malfunctioning hardware.
Audio is not muted out in alsamixer.
Code: | $ dmesg | grep sound

mplayer appears to work without error, just no sound getting out.
I am running Linux 3.17.4
Any suggestions for getting sound working again would be appreciated.

Near the end of the Gentoo Wiki Alsa article https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ALSA#Tips it is suggested to look at all the files in /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0. In my case several files state 'closed'. I don't know if this is relevant.
Code: | /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0]$ ls
hw_params info prealloc prealloc_max status sw_params
/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0]$ cat *

What means "stopped working" exactly: Did it work with gentoo, and did it stop working after some action (e.g. world update)? Or did it never work with gentoo?
Which kernel version are you using?
Are you using alsa or pulseaudio? |

> "stopped working" : sound / audio was working (for example with mplayer) but then after a reboot but then did not work: No sound (no error messages either)
Kernel 3.17.6
I'm using alsa, not pulseaudio |

SOLVED:
Although several reboots did not solve the issue, (however sound was working when I booted up Win7 on this dual boot system) A power cycle fixed the issue. I haven't seen a situation where a power cycle fixed an issue that a reboot didn't since SCSI PCI cards.
Sound from mplayer and aplay work fine now.
The only issue is that there is no audio from FireFox -- but there never has been on this new system. |

Current status: If I dual boot into Win7, I MUST power-cycle (not just reboot) if I want sound to work after I boot back into Gentoo. |

try set off the bios "pnp os" option (this should force your bios to always allocate itself irq to any devices and init them instead of letting the OS do that). |

Krinn:
Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, this Asus X99-A motherboard
http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/X99A/
does not seem to have a PNP OS option to turn off.
(I did set the motherboard to 'Other OS' which means non-uefi boot.
I also notice that about 25% of the time I boot this system, usually while "waiting for uevents to be processed", that the system freezes (ie. requires a press of the reset button). On the screen is some text about Null pointer. |

If possible try an older kernel (3.12 or 3.14) to identify whether it is a kernel version dependent problem or a general configuration/BIOS problem |
