Any new news on vdev?
I've been far from this thread for a long time, and see that it's been dormant for over a year. Just curious if things have been happening, but not discussed here. (Just checking, and I don't find recent vdev discussions on other forum threads, either.) _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |

Seems like it's not being actively developed, for now:
Taken from their git README
Quote: | This system is mothballed. It's usable if you know what you're doing--I've been using it for years on my laptop without issues--but it's not for typical users. Expect to get your hands dirty.
I do not have time to work on it in the foreseeable future, nor do I have time to answer support requests. |

Yes, that seems to be so. I was sort of surprised this could happen this easily, but I guess that's a problem with having to rely on only one "main" developer.
I've been hanging on Devuan mailing lists since I found out about vdevd and they do have some info on what might happen, this post suggests it'll still be developed by other people.
https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/message/20160922.232345.c35b8039.fi.html#dng
that link leads to a packaging site:
https://git.devuan.org/ralph.ronnquist/vdev
The page says it's "Devuan packaging", but it also states it's a fork of the vdevd project, so maybe he's going to start fixing and adding stuff when the packaging is done.
As for me, I ran the latest(ish) version of vdevd on Gentoo for a few months sort of fine. That is, I couldn't get vdevd to support gvfs -> made it hard for wife to use a digital camera and that was that. I still followed the development, but as Jude C. Nelson stopped developing it, I wasn't holding very high hopes for the thing ever getting to the point it would painlessly work.
Time will tell. The Devuan dudes don't seem bad people, but I get the impression they lack "muscle" when it comes to stuff like this, so any Gentoo tinkerers with extra time on their hands that are willing to test vdevd or even fix something are probably very welcome =). |
