Currently the nforce2 soundstorm does not have full hardware mixing support under linux. This is mainly due to NVIDA not writing one themselves AND not providing the information for others to do so.
This is the email that I sent:
Code:
I am the owner of an Nforce2 chipset with Soundstorm Audio. I would like to request that Nvidia either supply a fully functional Linux driver for Soundstorm (read hardware mixing) or release the necessary information for others to do so.

I am a hardware enthusiast and Linux support is a major factor in my purchasing decisions. ( I would put my purchasing cycle at 1 motherboard and 1 video card per year).

Please do the right thing,

Send NVIDA an email stressing how important this is to linux users.

*edit* nvidia says this is the correct email address.

So please post your complaints to that e-mail! Maybe we can get somethig out of this!

****EDIT-01-23-2004****
The following link is to a post on lyt nforcershq.com forums discussing the audio situation. A forum user has posted his correspondance with an nvidia rep/dev(?) in which it is stated that they are working on linux support. . . he also clarifies why the APU is a sore point for nvidia (not just in linux but in general)

http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36337&start=15

EDIT: Title was "Tell NVIDA we need full hardware mixing support under Linux!" --pjp

Yes ALSA is "working" there is a nvaudio driver too that nvidia put out (mainly based upon the intel8x0 sound driver in ALSA), but neither are "fully" functional. The sound works, but they don't have full hardware mixing capabilities. So mixing must be done via a software mixer a la esd or arts.

*edit* did you send an email? :D

Are the chips actually capable of full hardware mixing?

The chips themselves are great! They certainly support full hardware mixing as well as other goodies such as hardware dolby encoding. The only problem is that nvidia wont release enough details to enable the alsa guys to write a decent driver for it, nor will they write a *good* driver for it themselves!

Their support for graphics cards in linux is great, but their nforce support leaves a lot to be desired :(

Didn't get a whole lot of emails and I know there's a whole lot of Nforce2 users, so I'm giving her a bump. :)

I don't think nvidia really cares about Linux users, they're just here to avoid any concurrent from installing within the Linux community, they only care about their shitty "intellectual property" (they don't do anything beside design & drivers).

Your exactly right. Which is why it's so important to let them know there is a sizeable buying sector that cares about linux support. They DO care about $$$.

Personally I could care less how closed their drivers are as long as they develop fully functional ones.

Did you send your email? :D

Making this post sticky for now in order to allow as many people as possible to see and act on this request.

Here's the reply I got from them on this issue:

Quote:

We're currently working on porting APU micro-code and driver functionalityto Linux. I would still consider this to be an "investigation" at present, but we hope to be able to make it available in the future.

That quote probably translates to something like "looong coffee break, shit break, lunch break, smoking break, then might consider it, naah too bored, nevermind."

I just got an auto response, so that at least means they're getting enough emails in so they feel the need to have someone respond to them. Or at least wrote up a "special" auto-response. :)

Here's a copy of what I posted in krunks thread at nForcersHQ:

Quote:
What's the point, really? Even if nVidia were to release a Linux SoundStorm driver there's every chance it'd be closed source and the people still wouldn't be happy. Now that the breakthrough's been made with the LAN driver it's only a matter of time before they crack the audio drivers as well. It should really have been the other way around, a decent audio driver's been needed a lot longer than an open-source LAN driver (nvnet actually worked quite well, the fact it was closed source was really only a minor problem) but as long as people release closed source stuff on Linux the zealots see it as their duty to open it regardless of whether it's necessary or not. Now, I'm not trying to rag on what the forcedeth guys have achived here - it's nothing short of amazing - but the effort would still have been better spent creating a decent audio driver.

I don't think something as trivial as this is worth giving up what is arguably the best chipset the Athlon has ever seen in favour of shite from Via or Creative...

So far everything I have read about nforce3, pretty much makes believe it is in the shadow of kt800...
