Hello, I noticed that several pieces of software that were available to me as an opensuse user are not available for download on gentoo and I wanted to find them, but I don't know how.
I'm looking for the X font server /usr/bin/xfs normally, kiax, and libggz.
If there's some sort of package search software out there please let me know.
I have layman but have not signed up for any of the repos (they aren't too well documented being the current deterrent).
Thanks! |

I'm curious to know what combination of ancient programs and bizarre hardware you have that requires the obsolete 1980s X font server... |

X is xorg-server. And as said above, xfs is obsolete. Just use freetype and fontconfig.
umplayer is a fork of smplayer, tho they don't really advertise that, last I looked. So just use smplayer, or baka-mplayer.
For package search you'll want to use app-portage/eix. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

emerge -s|S can do the job, looks like the user is unaware of portage usage. |

emerge -S and -s do not turn up xfs or umplayer or any of the others, I tried that.
As for what packaes dependo on the ancient X font server how about these for starters:
fslffonts, and showfont. Every so often I run into a program thet needs it.
I these cases, I was tring to find a font previewer other then xfontsel because it does not, no, can nt, display all the installed fonts, due to multiple fonts fitting into multiple slots and it has no prev nor next button. Also, it can't show me the punctuation chars which is what I'm interested it the most. I like the + sign centered and of equal size on each side, and many fonts have it too low or high or they have the bottom have a tail.
I'm using blackbox, so I cant use on of the fancy font selection tools like kde's configuration wizard. Even if I could, I still want to know what the font is called ans kde's configuration wizard gives you a nice pretty-afied name, not the system file's name. |

So another case of X-Y Problem. Use gucharmap. |
