ERROR: interface eth0 does not exist [SOLVED]

I'm reinstalling Gentoo (I had a problem I couldn't solve on my own that was really getting me feeling down), so I've spent the last two days completely reinstalling Gentoo. Today I finally got the computer to boot off it's own kernel, and I was extremely excited until I saw this:

* Bringing up interface eth0
* ERROR: interface eth0 does not exist
* Ensure that you have loaded the correct kernel module for your hardware
* ERROR: net.eth0 failed to start

I cannot figure out why it's doing this. Some additional info:

I grepped 8139too for this,because I knew it to be a network module I'd used in the past...

I see now that my problem is actually net.eth0 being renamed. How do I stop it from being renamed or else use it with it's new name?

Seeing the modules are loaded try "ifconfig -a" it should show the connection with the name you need. Then change your settings to match that name.

There's no addresss for renamed eth0. And what setting do I change?

Your card is named enp5s8 change eth0 to enp5s8 in your config.

I don't understand. What config? I've always started /etc/init.d/net.eth0 to start networking. I know I'm being stupid and whiney, but I really don't understand this stuff....

Follow the config of the network in the book and use enp5s8 instead of eth0. In the book it also talks about renaming your connection to eth0. This would be an option too.

Since you already set up for net.eth0, apply the standard workaround for udev mangling your device names. Add net.ifnames=0 to your kernel command line, then reboot. That will tell udev not to mess with your device names.

This comes up pretty often. A Google search shows many people with this happening, and most of the top hits are from people who want to make it stop. Oddly, none of the front page hits are for Gentoo users.
