Hi,
XFCE 4.12 is fairly recent and is the unstable version in Gentoo.
4.10 is the stable one. I was wondering, how long does it take for a package (an this one in particular) to be upgraded to stable ? |

The rule of thumb is: at least 30 days in the official repo (aka "the portage tree"), not having open bugs, and all needed dependencies being marked stable already. Maintainers can follow their own discretion tho.
I have no idea about the status of Xfce. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

On a more practical note, the unstable branch of Gentoo is actually very stable. In fact, I can only recall two or three times when I had a problem with it in, maybe 5 years.
In my opinion, stable is good for servers but unstable is actually better suited to desktop users. You may wan to consider simply switching to the unstable branch. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.
Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box. |

With multiboot and a few extra GiB diskspace it is easy to go for both stable and unstable branch. I downgraded one unstable Gentoo to stable simply by restoring it using an old backup. After "emerge --sync", "emerge -Dvu world" managed to update/downgrade all packages. |

Ok thanks for your answers, i think i'll upgrade right away to the unstable version.
I guess i need to install ~xfce4-meta just for this package, how do I make that possible ? |

I wouldn't recommend that. Stable is solid. Unstable is solid. Mixing the two, not so much.
The file you are looking for is /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords. Add Code: | xfce-extra/*
xfce-base/* | But, as the saying goes, you get to keep all the pieces if it doesn't go smoothly.
Also, stable to unstable and back again shouldn't require any backups. It should be a nice and smooth transition. _________________ First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

Well, it's been exactly a month today that xfce 4.12 has been introduced as unstable, so I think i'll wait that it's made stable, i'm still new to Gentoo and Portage so i don't want to try going for the unstable. |
