Let's say there is a file I need, but dont have, what would be the best way to go about finding which package would provide that file?

I am basically looking for something like qpkg -f, but for uninstalled packages. (and qpkg -U -f doesn't work).

I assume I will have to use some external resource, maybe something on the web, since I can't think of how they would do it in portage.

This stuff varies according to the use flags in effect.

Even the ebuilds don't specify the full list of files that can be installed.

they often just do stuff like:
Code:
dobin *

There is nothing that I can seee( not a developer ) on this page that would tell me that installing 'gpp' is going to allow me to search for a given header file (say: glx.h ) and have results come back saying what package needs to be installed

...and btw..rpmfind.net will not work to find header files ;-)

so is this just not possible with portage??

thx
